Is IN & OUT Burgers a buncha sexist pigs?

Why do they make the female employees wear those god awful hats? The males get to wear those snappy paper soldier type hats, but the women, they get those oddly shaped short billed stupid ass hats.

Why are there sexual designations among hats at the home of the crossed palms?

Why do only female employees take your orders?

See what happens when you don't get out for a while?

Here is a photo that shows both hat styles:

I see a male employee manning the register, as well, and I have been waited on by a man on visits to In-N-Out burger. Personally, I think the women's hats are far more attractive, so I cannot see an evil or sexist motivation in the hat design choices.

My only objection to In-N-Out Burger is that I can only have one when I visit my family in California. We do not have them here in Minnesota, which deprives valid citizens of their right to eat them. While we do have Smashburger stores here, and I confess to enjoying their delicious, if messy, burgers, I cannot partake of my favorite burger without air travel.

This is a travesty of the largest proportions, and I thank you for your carefully thought out post that let me express my regret at In-N-Out Burger's unwillingness to expand into Minnesota.

A private biz can do whatever they want and this is perfect example of that. As long as they don't discriminate in hiring, then I have no truck with it at all... The only time I was bothered by any of that was on the night Obama got elected. I went to In and Out and went inside and there was a HUGE party going on for passage of prop 8, which for most int he crowd was far more important than Obama's election.

Couple of kids in a big group of kids kept pressuring me in the line about what I thought of 8 Winning, even after i told them i would rather not. Finally I got out of there without really letting fly and there seemed to be a big rally in the parking lot with a huge 4X4 with anti gay slogans plastered all over it being the cneter of attention....

But I figured the is the place religious people want to go and I should have known and not gone there that day. Or used the drive thru, which i seldom do)

The hats allow for hair to be pulled up and under; the paper things don't, because males are only allowed to have hair of 'x' length.

In fairness, I can't say with 100% certainty that that is their reasoning, however there are places around here that used to be similar and those were the exact reasons. You'll notice in the pictures that none of the women have any length of hair actually hanging (ie, its tucked up), and the men seem mostly shaved or very close to it.

whatever between the genders and call it sexism against women. Some people need to get a better grip. The differences in the hats could very well be nothing more than a response to the health laws in the normal difference in the length of the hair between the people working there.
The average person wouldn't even notice, nor should they. There are much more important things to work on. Most people would focus on the real problems and damage caused by those that would subjugate women because of their ability of getting pregnant. The problems caused by denying women their legal rights to a say in their Reproductive Rights. Or work to eliminate the the glass ceiling. Instead of going after anything where men are shown to be less than normal, as in tv shows, movies and commercials, as being somehow sexiest against women.

You know, work for actual equal Rights for all, regardless of race, gender, skin color, sexual preference or anything else used to divide us, including bullying. These hats hardly rise to that level.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Obvious flamebait. Making a joke out of sexism is inappropriate and insensitive.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sun Jan 19, 2014, 01:07 PM, and the Jury voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I agree that the OP was intended to marginalize concerns about the very real problem of sexism. It's dismissive and rude. There is no such thing as an overreaction to sexism, just as there is no such as an overreaction to racism. Both are always wrong. Always.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: stupid, but that's not forbidden

Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Debate it.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: this is tough, I have had 2 alerts for flamebait shot down recently so I am now inclined to leave. besides this is really pretty meh in terms of controversy...

Kitchens can involve lifting a lot of heavy items. Some organizations build tools to help with the lifting, others don't. In and Out may be one of the organizations that don't. Since you haven't been to every In and Out, how do you know that only women work the counter as a policy? Are you certain that employees don't get together before their shift starts and decide who works the counter and who works the kitchen?

You last complaint was the most ridiculous of all. Fast food restaurants are called that for a reason, they serve food fast and want customers to eat and move on. A person sitting around web surfing or playing Angry Birds while holding up a seat doesn't fit fast foods company's business model. They have a right to run to their business model.
