This country (and the world) is falling apart right before our eyes...

Last edited Wed Jan 29, 2014, 04:44 PM - Edit history (1)

One weather disaster after another due to climate change that half the nation denies is happening. From gun violence to these major, apocalyptic events like what is happening in Atlanta and polar vortexes, to rampant corporate and political corruption. From the money-hoarding 1% to the downfall of the global middle class. From wars for oil and poppies to socio-political turmoil in Egypt and Ukraine, and the lack of same in places where there should be protests but there are not due to fear of government, police, and job loss. From one man-made disaster, like Fukushima, to the next, like Charleston.

[strike]I swear it feels like we are in the end times.[/strike] This was tripping some people up. It was hyperbole.

I swear it feels like civilization is in decline. (Does this sufficiently remove any religious connotation to the events we're seeing in this, the second decade of the 21st Century? Still too "doom and gloom" for the times?)

1. End Times? Really? FFS?

Really?

You know the world at any given time has sucked pretty much everywhere. Nothing has really changed. Nothing probably ever will until we evolve as a race and the first step is to stop believing in BULLSHIT like END TIMES.

2. My hyperbole excites you ... way too much.

Actually, I'm an atheist. So, I don't believe in the END TIMES ... BOO!

Try to relax maybe...

6. You really believe

that what we're seeing is no different than the past? Makes no difference that there's 3X's as many of us as there were in 1950?

12. Except for one economic slump, I remember most of my growing up to be much

better times than they are today. It was the 70s and 80s and during the Clinton years was the last time I thought to myself or discussed with anyone how good life was and how at peace the world was, both climate-wise (though glaciers had by then started their retreats, etc) and humanity-wise.

24. Climate Denial.WTF did you get that?

All I am saying is there have always been catastrophes in the world and one or two examples is not enough for someone to go off about fucking END TIMES. I firmly believe in climate change.

When I say NOTHING EVER CHANGES, I mean the world as a whole. As in people still suck politicians suck harder and the idiots keep believing in fucking END TIMES.

got it sparky?

20. "End Times" could be a biblical thing, or an environmental thing

We can deny the first to our heart's content, but we deny the second at our grave peril. Nothing has changed? What about the climate?

27. See post 24

I see where my words could be misconstrued. I am talking about the whole sky is falling world is ending attitude. Especially when couched in religious terms and that is what the fucking term END TIMES means. You can play semantic games all you want END TIMES refers to Christianity and the end of the world and the world ain't gonna end for billions of years.

We may fuck ourselves right the hell off but the world will be fine.

7. You're right, to an extent. I didn't actually mean it is falling into broken chunks floating thru

space. Funny, lol, I didn't think someone would try to take that from the figurative thing I was saying.

I guess there'll always be someone you have to explain yourself to ... whether it's actually necessary or not.

I went ahead and deleted it because, yes, it doesn't look quite right, though it was meant figuratively. But I also removed it because if it can trip you up, I guess it can trip others up too.

Jesus.

an endorsement of how wonderful things are now. Thanks for posting this, though.

Last edited Wed Jan 29, 2014, 05:15 PM - Edit history (1)

that "We're actually living in one of the most peaceful times in global history.". But I think that depends a lot on a person's definition of peaceful. Peaceful by what means? could make a difference in perspective. Peaceful for whom also makes a difference. Stable peace is different from peace at a point in time. What properties are present that make peace a permanent fixture rather than an period of exception. Time is a strange word when talking about human history and it's nonsensical when comparing it to global history where we are not even a blip. Perspectives are important to survival now that there is a reasoning animal on the planet.

17. Humans have had their negative influence

on the earth in the last 5000 years for sure. Now there are more of us, we have advanced toys and we have less anonymity. But we still have the same reptilian survival needs turned greed, the same need to protect the clan turned nationalism, and a sense to sacrifice the weaker for the powerful turned politics. Those elements are not conducive to advancing humanity. I think we're devolving and we are now deep in that process. Whether that process can change directions or slow down all depends on our choices before our sociopathic side pulls us to the point of no return. In the end, there will be no end time, because the earth will always be the ultimate winner.

18. End times? I think not .Imagine you lived in the early 1940's....Or the 30's....Or other times

I agree things generally suck at the moment. And donlt seem headed in a good direction.

But I don't think its end times. Imagine being alive when the economy had been down for a decade and fascism (real fascism of tghe Nazi variety) was on the rise and seemed poised to take over the world..,.Or many other periods in history when forces converged in a stressful way (by coincidence or not).

21. And no matter how many times we revolt the upper 1% wins every time.

The fact that we live in a world where 85 people control as much wealth as the bottom 2 billion is disturbing enough. But no matter how many times Egypt, Greece, Thailand, any number of countries overthrow their governments, the system is still rigged for the precious 85. George Carlin was right - it's a big club and we're not in it.

29. There are a lot of scientists who firmly believe that

we are either at the precipice are already in an extinction event. This one is different than the previous ones in the past in the fact that we've fucked up the oceans this time.

We need to start cleaning up Mother Earth or she going to shit us out like the turds we are.
