A shooting has been reported on the campus of Florida State College.
That's nine school shootings in a month, if my accounting is correct. On pace for 108 school shootings by New Year's Eve.

The alerter got a lucky jury who hasn't been paying attention.

(29,219 posts)Someone being beaten up (enough to put him in the hospital) gets a gun to defend himself from his attackers and shoots one of them (also now in the hospital).
Initially sounds to me like self defense.
But to the point of the number of other "traditional" school and mall shootings this year... it's insane. Even the last sentence where I used "traditional" to describe columbine style school shootings is really sickening, but maybe appropriate now.

(18,752 posts)The shooter made himself judge, jury and (attempted ) executioner. He selfishly put others lives at risk to protect his own life without considering the risk to the community.
In their eyes he is as much a criminal; possibly greater since he could have injured even more people. The two attackers were focused on just one person.

(29,219 posts)only a very very few humans rise above that to "always turn the other cheek". Many of those people we call martyrs.
Someone attacks me, I will do anything to stop the attack, including killing the attacker if needed.
As a society, we have always excused this level of violence as justified.

(18,752 posts)you will see others who do not. Regardless of circumstances, the person shot becomes the victim.
You can see below the mindset- he should have drove away... that being beaten by two people using a pool cue, perhaps making starting the car and driving a bit difficult, is irrelevant.

(18,752 posts)he should have let the two men continue to beat him? It appears the cue was already broken, retreat was not working...
Both sides are claiming self defense- is one side more believable?

(18,585 posts).. once you realize that it appears to be self-defense.
The man who was being beaten retreated to his car, where he grabbed a gun. According to witnesses, he fired his gun, wounding one person, as he was being beaten.
In the parking lot, a pool cue snapped in half lay about 50 feet from a red car with its engine still running.
The shooting comes about six weeks after a state appeals court ruled that students attending public universities can keep weapons in their cars while on campus, according to Reuters.

(19,846 posts)If he had time to 'grab a gun,' which I'm certain was adequately secured away in the vehicle in full compliance with local laws, he had time to drive away.

(18,585 posts)The gun could have been in a door pocket, tucked between the seat and door, or in the center console. All perfectly legal.
You assume a lot.

(44,228 posts)Far right, beside Dr Jill Biden is Kaitlin Roig, a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary, who attended Obama's 2013 SOTU address.
Surely, she was there as a prop to glorify school shootings, or something.

(6,568 posts)I live in Palm Bay, about 2-3 miles from the campus. It was big news here yesterday. It was also a cut and dry self-defense shooting. Two guys beating the shit out of a guy in the parking lot, with a pool cue. The shooter is hospitalized with injuries, as is one of the assailants (with a bullet wound, of course). Everyone is expected to survive, however the one who was shot is in better condition than the shooter.
