Gov. Chris Christie has issued a state of emergency as a major winter storm socks New Jersey with snow a day after temperatures got into the 50s.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm advisory for the area through 7 p.m. today.

Christie also authorized a staggered dismissal for nonessential state employees to help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel hazards.
