"Let Germany brew your beer" Yeah right on, Bob.
I don't care that you did an ad, when you did the Victoria's Secret ad, I was over that. When Jerry Garcia did a Levis' ad I was over the whole thing.
But this is an outright diss at American craft brewing.
I'm appalled. Outraged. disgusted.

I am thinking of starting a special BOB DYLAN themed craft brewing line.

(15,359 posts)Bud and Miller products. I didn't know about real beer I realize now, I just knew what we thought. It was kind of understandable for guys that make their living selling half-racks of crap to alcoholics that are going to suck the whole 12 beers down in one night. I would only say that kind of American light beer is really ideal for hot days on the river when you're out to pound a bunch down fishing. A higher alcohol heavier beer is a Little harsh under those conditions.
It was 1994 in Seattle for the "Stones" Voodoo Lounge show that I really drank my first craft brews. I think the first I really liked may have been Coos Bay Amber Ale if I remember the name right. The guys I was with took me to a little bar they knew where we played shuffle board and drank mostly pounders of that. I had to admit it was really enjoyable.
At the beer distributor we hated anything that made things harder on us. The micro brews were cutting into our sales and then Anheuser Busch bought out the Red Hook brewery and forced that on us. We also really hated the high alcohol "ice" beers we had to start pushing. We were really right about that one I think. Good call corporate guys! Sell cheaper high alcohol beer to alcoholics, make them drunker faster, get them in more trouble and manage to lose more money! The same guy might have had to been satisfied with the lower alcohol stuff or would have had to buy more beer and spend more money. WTF were they thinking there?

(26,117 posts)I did wonder about the logic of the ad when I saw it during the game.
It seemed odd to me to promote "buying American" when it comes to cars, but promote buying other products from other countries. I mean, I get it as an advertising device, but it still seemed weird.
MineralMan
(151,269 posts)This might have been one, I suppose. It's unimportant, though, really. Bob Dylan's comments about beer and cars aren't really going to influence people much about either, I imagine.
I read it as "If you want to, buy German Beer, but buy American Cars." Since it was a car company sponsoring the ads, it's pretty shruggable, I think.
The reality is that most Americans buy American beer, because it's cheaper. Beer connoisseurs might buy American craft beers or imported beers. Most probably buy both at one time or another. The same applies to cars. And most US car companies have vehicles manufactured all or in part outside of the US, so the distinction is difficult to make, really.
I'm a Dylan fan since the early 1960s. I do not believe, though, that Bob Dylan's opinions about consumer merchandise has ever entered into any of my decisions.
Besides, Chrysler is a foreign-owned corporation these days, anyhow.
Again -

(26,117 posts)I was shocked to see him in an ad at all - it seems so "establishment." There was an earlier ad during the game in which a Dylan song played in the background, and even that surprised me. I guess he's done ads for other products, but I only learned about that today on DU.
I've been a Dylan fan since I was a kid (thanks to my older siblings).

(3,220 posts)American beer doesn't mean "Budweiser" anymore. Bud, Miller, etc. are sinking ships. Craft brews are massacring them.
America is brewing some good beer these days. You have to find that local brewer that bought space in an old factory / has spiders everywhere / has the fat guy drinking his own beer while giving you samples / you think you might get knifed in the parking lot.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)1. Bud Light (about $6 billion in sales)
2. Coors Light (about $2.2 billion)
3. Bud ($2.1 billion)
4. Miller Lite ($1.9 billion)
5. Natural Light ($1.2 billion)
6. Corona Extra ($1.1 billion)
7. Busch light ($824 million)
8. Busch ($710 million)
9. Michelob Ultra Light ($698 million, up 17% over the previous year)
All had gained in sales over the previous year except Bud (#3) and Busch (#8) which were slightly down. The craft brews are much better, but the "swill" beers aren't going anywhere.

(32,354 posts)That craft beer mystique that's being flogged so hard these days provides cover for a lot of mediocre-to-dogpiss-quality brews, in my experience.
A lot of them seem more concerned with a jivey name and a quirky label over what is actually inside the bottle or can.

Imports are way better
Bennyboy
(10,440 posts)There are huge differences between say, Moose Drool and Pliny the Elder(or Younger) and Allagash White, Coloma brown. Perhaps you should stray from IPA's nad Pale Ales and go more for less hoppy beers like Porters, stouts, browns, Belgians or sours.
I live in the cradle of brewing, NORCAL< and let me tell ya, beer rocks. Neighborhood breweries making killer beers. Ever brewer making different beers, different styles..
Sierra Nevada? Wow, They are amazing, the Beer Camps, the restaurant beeer camps, the celebrity brews and all the seasonals. Amazing.
BTW, most "Import Beers" are not. They are brewed here in the US by some conglomerate (INBEV, Coors/Miller)that owns that brewery and name and then sold as imports. Unless you are buying at a specialty house, it is not likely imported.
Wanna make a difference? OCCUPY YOUR BEER GLASS!

(54,770 posts)You've gotta lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin'
You've gotta lotta nerve to say you have a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that's winnin'
You see me on the street, you always act surprised
Ya say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it
I know the reason you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you're in with
But do you take me for such a fool, to think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don't know to begin with?
You say I've let you down - ya know its not like that
If you're so hurt, why then doncha show it?
You say you've lost your faith, but that's not where its at
Ya have no faith to lose - an' ya know it
No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them
And tho I know you're dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don't you understand, its not my problem?
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you.
