Kansas lawmakers not content with legislating women's bodies, now they want to legislate how divorce

http://www.kwch.com/news/local-news/bill-would-ban-incompatability-divorces/-/21054266/24361334/-/l3fcms/-/index.html

Kansas lawmakers are debating a bill that would ban "irreconcilable differences" as grounds for divorce.

Republican John Bradford of Lansing introduced the bill in the Kansas House. Supporters of the measure say it's too easy to get a divorce in Kansas.

Decades ago, couples were only granted a divorce if a spouse did something wrong. But the new legislation would require the person filing for divorce to submit a valid reason, beyond incompatibility.

Enacting stupid, punitive laws isn't going to make people stay together against their will. It's just going to make them waste time and money getting their divorce someplace with smarter laws.

The scene: A cozy apartment in Emporia inhabited by Cynthia, a single woman who lives alone with her kittens. The phone rings.

"Hi Cynthia, it's Mary."

'Hey! What's up?'

"Oh not much...you know Frank and I aren't really happy together anymore. We've just drifted apart, and we both feel we'd be better off starting over."

'I'm sorry.'

"Don't be! It happens. Neither of us is really sorry. You shouldn't be either."

'You got everything worked out?'

"Yeah, as much as you can. We're going to sell the house and split the proceeds. We've always had separate bank accounts and cars. He'll take his things and I'll take mine, and we'll just depart happy."

'So...what's the favor?'

"You know about this new law here in Kansas that bans no-fault divorce? Before it was passed we could have just gone to the courthouse and filed. But now we need grounds for divorce, as stupid as that sounds, and 'we just don't wanna be married to each other anymore' doesn't count. I hate to ask this but..."

'But what?'

"Could you come over to my house and have sex with Frank for me? Thanks hon, you're the greatest."

You do get the idea: if only "fault" divorce is allowed, people will invent "faults" to accuse their spouses of.

If somebody started a thread about a nickel increase in the price of candy bars, you'd connect it back to Fukushima somehow.

for treating those idiots that way. People on here would be screaming "HEY ASSHOLE! I have family that are rightwingnuts!! You need to check yourself!"

And I would light this website up on the radar of several alphabet agencies.

It's best for everyone if I just draw my own line and then toe it.

I liked what you wrote in that Fukushima thread last week. You put it right to them and the jury let you slide 3-3. Made me smile, it did. I'd have been banned! You just keep on keeping on.

After I posted it and then re-read it in posted form (I tend to post and then reflect, lol) I was sure it would be voted dead. Squeaked through, though.

Yea, I really can't stand those Smugsters that lurk around waiting to lecture somebody all the time or roll out their latest obnoxiousness, comprised often by snarky one-liners that add nothing at all to the conversation. I'm sure I'll bungle the approach to that line again. And hopefully I'll squeak through again .
