Mildred Loving

"We made a commitment to each other in our love and lives, and now had the legal commitment, called marriage, to match. Isn't that what marriage is? . . . I have lived long enough now to see big changes. The older generation's fears and prejudices have given way, and today's young people realize that if someone loves someone they have a right to marry. Surrounded as I am now by wonderful children and grandchildren, not a day goes by that I don't think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the 'wrong kind of person' for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people's religious beliefs over others. ... I support the freedom to marry for all. That's what Loving, and loving, are all about."

Allen's ruling opened with a quote from a defendant in another historic marriage case that came from Virginia — Mildred Loving, an African-American woman who in 1967 successfully sued the state to marry her white husband, Richard Loving. As it reached the U.S. Supreme Court, Loving v. Virginia became a landmark case that struck down anti-miscegenation laws nationwide. Justice Allen included a quote from a pro-equality address Mildred Loving delivered on June 27, 2007, the 40th anniversary of the landmark ruling in her favor:

I remember the "kids are gonna come out looking like zebras" bullshit from that time and it didn't come solely from white people.

Through it all, she held her head up high the only way someone who knows they're on the side of the angels can.

And she was.

it coalesces with Judge Athena Allen's Ruling that.. "Virginia Marriage Ban Unconstitutional"!

From your link..

Allen's ruling dismissed claims from the defendant-intervenors, who argued that same-sex couples were attempting to "create and exercise a new (and some suggest threatening) right" to marriage. In reality,
"plaintiffs ask for nothing more than to exercise a right that is enjoyed by the vast majority of Virginia's adult citizens," writes Allen.

The ruling also outright rejects defendants' arguments that Virginia has a "legitimate state interest" in preserving the "tradition" of opposite-sex marriage. "Tradition is revered in the Commonwealth, and often rightly so," writes Allen. "However, tradition alone cannot justify denying same-sex couples the right to marry any more than it could justify Virginia's ban on interracial marriage."

I love the message on these signs~

So ironic.. Mildred Loving!

As for Loving...

Mildred Loving was born on July 22, 1939 in Central Point, Va. She was of African-American and Native American descent and--in marrying Richard Loving, who was white--violated Virginia's Racial Integrity Act. The couple were ordered to leave the state but Robert Kennedy and the ACLU helped the Lovings strike down Virginia's law in the US Supreme Court. Mildred died in 2008.

Activist. Born Mildred Delores Jeter on July 22, 1939, in Central Point, Virginia. The shy, somewhat soft-spoken Mildred became a reluctant activist in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s when she and her husband, Richard Loving, successfully challenged Virginia's ban on interracial marriage.

As for loving, it is not about color, it is not about gender. It is about freedom and equality
and every persons right to love with their heart. Nothing else matters.

from your link.. fascinating.

snip//

"Richard ended up spending a night in jail, the pregnant Mildred several more, and the couple eventually pleaded guilty to violating Virginia's Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which recognized citizens as "pure white" only if they could claim white lineage all the way back to 1684. The Lovings' one-year sentences were suspended, but the plea bargain came with a price: The couple was ordered to leave the state and not return together for 25 years."

I'm glad I'm not freaking pure anything.. much less "pure white" what an insult to people's intelligence. How sadly devoid of compassion and human understanding for such a long time.. and so many still haven't evolved. No wonder they don't believe in evolution. They missed the boat.

snip//

"Almighty God created the races white, white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents," Judge Leon M. Bazile ruled. "And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."

Oh, right.. this MF speaks for GOD "Stay on your own continent!"

"Still, there's little doubt about Mildred and Richard's legacy. There's an unofficial holiday celebrating their triumph and multiculturalism, called Loving Day (June 12). More importantly, the prohibition against mixed race marriages has been stripped out of every state constitution."

June 12th is my daughter's birthday, she.. Loving Day~ My grandson goes to the University of Virginia..

All I can say is "Wow!" while reading her reasons for the decision.

For Allen, opening with that Loving quote was like the cherry on top! I remember very well when the Loving couple changed our nation, for the better, and reading her words now, hearing what she's saying all of these years later is simply beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing that article!
