Both faced obstruction of their policies by pigheaded congresses. The thing that was so sad with Mr. Carter's presidency is that his own party defied him. At least with Mr. Obama his problems can be laid at the feet of the Pukes.

So yes! VOTE and get your neighbors and friends to VOTE. Throw the bums out!!!!

Everytime my Dad went through Georgia on a Sunday he would stop and go to Church with his President the Carter's were always so kind to him. I love them for that the were real people even though Jimmy Carter had been President he still talked to my Daddy like he was somebody I have some pictures of those times. I miss him and his enthusiasm The last trip we made together was to a President Obama rally in Athens Ohio. I have to say the President was a real and sweet person he was gracious and funny. We also got to see an old friend Governor Ted Strickland from our hometown Portsmouth Ohio or near there, he lived in Democratic HQ in the years we lived there. I meet him when I was 7 he didn't recognize me, but he remembered Dad and Mom working so hard on his Congressional campaign. It was a great trip my dad died just 5 months later. He had met Johnson, Carter, Clinton, and Obama. He was a good Democrat who despised Republicans he thought the whole Tea Party had an IQ of 20 if you lumped them altogether his words exactly.

evils of a capitalistic, racist, sexist, homophobic, finically religious society that developed over centuries. He is the cause of the upward swing in poverty and homelessness in this nation. And we are angry because he has militarily killed innocent people in one place but not killed enough of them in other places. A close examination of his record reveals that there has been absolutely nothing done in any social or economic area that has caused or will eventually cause meaningful changes in the pariah, privileged systems that threaten us all. Most of all we are angry because he hasn't executed the entire group of Congress critters and has chosen to try to negotiate with them to give us a functioning government that attempts to benefit ALL the people. Damn, I'll be glad when he is not in the WH.

Being pissed at 90% of the presidents in the 40+ years I've been voting had nothing to do with my votes in the off years. I vote as a matter of principle-if you don't vote you have no right to complain. I haven't missed an election yet since I was first able to vote and I won't start now.

It was the same street number just the apartment was wrong. That's par for the course in SC

Sun Feb 16, 2014, 09:39 AM
Feb 2014

No one on DU (and probably no one anywhere else) has actually made the argument that you take on.

This site has seen serious discussions about specific issues, in which no one has demanded that Obama single-handedly correct all the system's evils. Instead, both sides have made intelligent arguments based on facts. If you want to influence anyone's opinion, that's the better way to do it.

I didn't say Obama should single-handedly correct anything . It's a fact that people are going hungry in this Country if you don't think so OK. Come to Southern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky. We stand in food bank lines for hours sometimes we get turned away because they have run out of food. Many mothers don't eat for days so their kids can.

Feb 2014

Just recently I got suspended because I criticized someone on this site for blasting Obama for having the temerity to honor by simply acknowledging soldier who had suffered severe and permanent wounds in combat after ten tours of duty. The soldier was referred to on this board as a "tool." There are people on this site who practice intellectual elitism, denounce ideological impurity and demonstrate real hatred for the president. No doubt, there will be those here who will criticize me and try to suggest that I be banned again for suggesting that there are those who think their views are morally superior. We need to get control of the house and keep the senate. Everything else is just flotsam and jetsam.

The minor disagreement you cite seems to me to be a typical one in which each side can make some coherent argument. Democrats who are unhappy with one particular aspect of one particular Obama speech can't reasonably be described in the sweeping terms of the post I answered, nor does such criticism prove that they hate Obama.

I suspect there are many people on this board who, like me, voted for Obama in both elections, would do so again without hesitation, but whose posts here contain more criticism of him than praise. There's really not much point to posting on DU to point out that, on something like the clean debt ceiling bill, Obama is right and Cruz is wrong. Anyone coming to DU already knows that.

The sarcasm graphic means that the author actually believes the exact opposite of what's posted. The post uses sarcasm to criticize a particular opinion.

My point is that the opinion being criticized is not one that any DUers actually hold. That's why it's a straw man.

Consider this hypothetical post: "Yeah, Obama's college-student mother spent a huge amount of money flying halfway around the world to give birth in a third world country, then, knowing that her son would run for President, she planted a fake birth announcement in the Honolulu paper. That makes total sense to me." That would be a similar use of sarcasm to criticize a particular opinion. The difference is that the opinion being criticized is one that numerous people actually hold and repeatedly express, so it's not a straw man.

I have 4 children at home 5 altogether . I used my savings to come home to Ohio from South Carolina to help my ailing parents in 2011.In August 2012 I fell from a ladder and messed up my back and I was told I couldn't work I applied for SSD and have been denied 3 times. In November my Snap benefits were cut by $162 There are days I don't eat or take my insulin so my kids can eat. I am a Loss Prevention Officer by Profession I have applied to every retail store within 50 miles of me nobody wants me because of my injuries. I am not an entitled bum. I worked most of my life at a few trades. I have a degree that is now worthless to me. My kids eat a lot of lentils and rice mostly brown and pinto beans and potatoes. By the end of the month, about 10 days I have to rely on my local food bank thanks to the cuts to my SNAP my kids don't deserve this scorn and I truly hate all Republicans and Tea Party people if I can call them that they are monsters who need ousted before people die My Parents both died last year 4 months apart I am still very sad over that it's a pain that hurts so deeply because had they had Healthcare they may still be alive

I'm not upset with the President and I think he has shown awesome leadership. Now there are some things I disagree with the President on but overall he is a good President. Now congress is a different issue, you can not lead crazy people. And most of people that have R's next to their names in congress are totally bat shit crazy. You want action, vote 2014/2016 and weed out the nay sayers, and the teapublicans. Congress is too blame for all this, every bit of it. If Congress had a mind to help all Americans instead of the ones who they feel will help them, imagine what would have passed. 18. GOTV!!
Sun Feb 16, 2014, 10:38 AM
Feb 2014

we have got to hammer this home every single day for the next 8 months! and that is ONLY 8 months!!

everyone go to OFA and sign up to make calls to battleground districts across the country, even if it's just a half hour a week.

(and as an aside, every time someone complains about obama, i ask them to first consider how they would handle things, each issue and the whole shebang. and any different decision they offer, it is actually not that hard to follow up with a tracking of just how any such bold action would fly. example: ok so you go all aggressive with the bankers; how do you think that plays in the media? you can't arrest them all, all at once; think of the backlash from that - doom. same thing with climate change and marriage equality and this gawdforsaken tea party congress; he has had to tread so lightly, so delicately, it's a miracle he's been able to get anything done. because, this system is so dysfunctional it's not just a maze, but a maze of locked-in closets with all the good doors bolted shut and all the questionable doors leading to marginal pathways that may or may not even lead at some point along the way to some wiggle room.

and as for the nsa and drones, i'm dead set against what the entire military has become, but know this: it's become THE overwhelming power in this country that, despite being commander in chief, NO president can even consider bucking. the only reason bush did so well with them was because he was, after all, their man; he did what they want because all his cronies (darth cheney, i'm lookin' at you) were, erm, invested in their wars. what's more, again put yourself in the shoes - with the holes in the bottom - of this prez: first, he's a black man, and anyone who's spent any time in the military knows how rampant is racism of all kinds there. second, with all those military and spy guys telling you these awful people are out there plotting awful things to bring awful death and destruction on americans, you're going to back off saving american lives on principle? think about that. i know; sucks. but hey, there it is. this country is ruled by a military that is hand-in-glove with "american interests," code for corporate power.

which, dear friends, is the very definition of fascism.

again, i ask you: no matter how principled you might be, how would you choose to make each and every decision every day as a president in these times?
as a black man?

every single decision he makes, and has made, has led and leads to nuclear knee-jerk reactions, loudly megaphoned by the media.

really, think about it. i am still trusting this man's principles and wisdom to open what doors he can that have the best chance of giving more power to the people, at least by baby steps, and leaving some of the more explosive battles with the bigger guns - ones with less hopeful outcomes - for another day when more people DO have more power. hopefully, their power will then just collapse through attrition. like soviet russia.

he is NOT our knight in shining armor, racing forward on a white steed.

he is NOT "my way or the highway," even if that way might be "right." er, principled.

he is NOT bush.

thank the FSM.
