He could have such kept his damn mouth shut and drove out of there grumbling about the "loud music".. but no, Dunn had to be a big shot, start a fight and go get a gun to shoot up the car. Justification came later.

(16,067 posts)hlthe2b
(102,342 posts)There was no denying--even from Zimmerman that he pulled a gun. there is no denial he shot someone. Thus your simplistic view of Florida law is just that. It is not true that if one "pulls a gun, they get 10 years", nor that if one "shoots someone, they get life", given they may not even charge that crime. Overly simplistic and wrong. And, with SYG and similar laws, Florida has become nothing more than a gun-obsessed haven for narcissists and haters of all stripes. Thanks for playing.
Lochloosa
(16,067 posts)10-20-Life does apply to this case because of the 3 attempted murder CONVICTIONS.
He pulled and shot at the car putting three other peoples lives in danger. 20 years each count with no parole.

(5,810 posts)Dunn saw no need to contact police about the shooting, even though he claimed he was in fear for his life. Therefore the need to shoot into the car of teenagers because he thought they had a gun. And speaking of shooting into that car, did you get a load of the size of the holes in the car??? Can you imagine what it did to that young man when the bullet tore into his flesh? And he was not curious how that turned out? He had that gun for years and had to be fully aware of what it would do to a human who got hit with even one of the bullets. He didn't want to report what he thought they were about to do to him? Did he not think it was worth reporting to the police that a car load of gun toting "thugs" were on the loose in Jacksonville?
Instead he calmly puts his car into drive and heads off to his Bed and Breakfast get away with his girlfriend. Enjoys a pizza and some drinks. Mentions nothing to her about seeing a gun. Was there no discussion of what had just taken place while they were on their way to St. Augustine?
His lack of curiosity about the results of the shooting (10 shots!!!) is so odd and what stands out for me. Perhaps that is the most obvious indication of his sense of entitlement that what he did was OK and within his rights to do. So much that he didn't even think he needed to notify the police about what he had done. Mind boggling when you think about it.

(10,857 posts)Grammy, the lack of empathy or remorse is pretty obvious in his own response, isn't it? The people he shot at were non-persons to him, and his surprise seems to be that others do not share his beliefs.
I don't know if the psychologists have described this sort of thing, but I swear I know what it is: stupid conservatives who are beginning to emulate the sociopathic thought processes of the media authorities who program them.
It makes me wonder if empathy and remorse may yet catch up to this guy--while he's living out a personal hell as a marked man in prison.

(34,137 posts)What we don't know is if the jury hung on what level of charge for the murder of Jordan Davis or if any of the jurors bought into Dunn's claim that Davis had a weapon. If any jurors believed that, then Dunn's claim of self defense may have factored in.
As for the level of charge, I can't believe that a juror would hold out for first degree if the rest were willing to convict on second degree. I suspect there was enough doubt about Dunn's belief that his life was in danger that a juror or two hung the murder charge.
I hope the prosecutors talk to the jurors to find out what they can do next time to convict Dunn. For the public, it would be interesting to hear from the jurors, but I don't want them to come out publicly if it would affect a re-trial.

(57,157 posts)just like the one I iced! Guilty?" I wonder what he got away with in his life that has made him so arrogant. He thinks the NFL rules apply to him: no harm, no foul. "And they coulda had a gun!" He didn't think he needed a defense for murder, he thought he had an excuse to walk away from killing someone who needed killing. His first big surprise was when he realized he only killed one of them. He'll regain his senses soon enough in prison.

(17,493 posts)self defense or stand your ground.
The Tampa Bay Times has an excellent report on SYG shootings which they update occasionally. It's interactive and easy to use. Unfortunately it doesn't cover all self defense shootings. The newspaper accumulated a list of all the SYG cases they could find since the law went into effect in 2005.
For example in those case where there was a fatal shooting; 44 people were convicted, 75 shootings were ruled as justified and 15 cases are pending. (The Zimmerman/Martin shooting is in the Hispanic/ black section of the report.)
The Tampa Bay Times only found 11 cases in which a white individual killed a black person and claimed SYG. The Dunn case is one but his case is currently called "pending." In such cases 1 was convicted, 6 were ruled as justified and 4 are pending (including Dunn.)
The media would lead you to believe that because of the SYG law, Florida has turned into the Wild West. The Tampa Bay Times found a total of 249 cases involving this law in an 8 year time frame 74 of which resulted in a conviction, 147 that were ruled as justified and 24 that are pending.
But still if you read the report and look at the individual cases and their outcomes you will most likely find that the SYG law in Florida needs to be rewritten. There are a good number of cases where a shooting was ruled as justified that are at the best questionable. Stand your ground does not mean chase down and kill nor should it provide protection for those involved in illegal activity.
