What the NFLPA should do if the "n word" ban is passed

Words have meanings, the meanings change based on who is saying them and their intent. If you've ever been near the filed for an NFL game you will understand how silly the idea for ejecting players who use the "n word" twice in a football game is.

Players could just chose another word to use, even something silly like grapefruit and see if the NFL will then tell them they are not allowed to speak that word either. The NFL could have a whole list of words they do not allow players to utter.

Make the NFL rule book include items such as this: You may say this word when you are not near anyone, you may say that word at any time, if you wish to say this other word you must first ask our permission.

However it would be easier if entire teams went to the officials and said the "n word" twice garnering 15 yard penalties and then game ejections for all 106 players in the game. Let's see how much advertising the NFL sells for week 2 after every game is over before kickoff. Surely they will tell everyone the most important thing is the executives have controlled the mouths and words these players are saying. The games can wait, as long as the players are kept in line and speak as they are told to speak.

It will be interesting to see what the Union says when the ejection (or penalty) rate mirrors the 90% rate from your post. The work environment of the NFL is unique. We are going to have an interesting clash of cultures here.

Sorry. The "N" word has a long and sordid history. Banning its use is fine with me, and I would bet that it will be ok with everyone in the NFL. It is a business, and people work for a living there. They don't have the luxury of high school level acts of civil disobedience.

And that ridiculous pressure group saying they want it eliminated everywhere from the locker room to the field, which isn't remotely possible.

My guess is that Goodell doesn't touch this isuse with a 10 foot pole

Context is important and that particular word, from a black player, directed at another black player "fuck you think you were doing on that last play, ------?" or "damn, ------, that was a beautiful interception" has a different force, context and meaning than coming from a white player. Only the NFL has a problem if they say "it's okay for these players to say this and not those" because there'll be predictable accusations of double standards and even that old favourite "reverse racism". (Contrast this with the English Premier League where a player, John Terry, who is white, received a 4-match ban and a £220K fine...around US$350K...for "racial abuse" for calling another player a "black c---".)

as a sometimes soccer referee I have learned curses and slurs in several languages. The cursing will get at least a warning, depending on context. Any slur is a straight red- ejection and likely 1+ game suspension.

Such talk has no place in work or sports. If that's your trash talk, you need to look at what sort of person you are...
