I would like to make a point about the recent storm here in Southern California

some people think that since nothing happened to them and they were just wet, it was fine.

Well these are from Glendorra during this weekend

Heavy Downpour Causes Mudslide In Glendora

March 1, 2014 12:20 PM

GLENDORA (CBSLA.com) — Heavy downpour caused a small mudslide in rain-soaked Glendora on Saturday morning.
Shortly after 6:30 a.m., a fast rush of debris and mud flowed down Sierra Madre Avenue and Hicrest Road, reported KCAL9′s Louisa Hodge.

But the storm’s havoc didn’t end there.

In Azusa, a tornado warning was issued just before 3:30 a.m. The storm cell, however, did not materialize into a tornado but turned into a severe thunderstorm, squeezing out about an inch of hail near the city of Walnut, KCAL9 Meteorologist Amber Lee reported.

Aerial footage in Monrovia captured images of mud filling a pool and hot tub. K-rails and other homemade barricades helped keep the mud at bay, however.

Meanwhile, mandatory evacuation orders for Glendora, Azusa, and Monrovia remain in effect.

http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2014/03/01/heavy-downpour-causes-small-mudslide-in-sierra-madre/

Finally here in San Diego we had a couple rural communities that did not have power for 36 hours. Some of the people affected are elderly and disabled, trust me, it was not funny to them. We also had mud entering homes in homes here. So while you are all nice and bundled up and all you got was some wet hair. to some people it was a serious thing.

For the most part it did what it usually does, but there is more. There were more than a few accidents in the back country. Totals just for my county by the CHP topped 800 accidents in 48 hours, and some of them were in areas where usually Medical helicopters are called in. Those choppers refused the call due to weather conditions, including heavy rain and high winds as well as wind sheers near the surface.

The uncaring and chuckling attitude by some is not only personally disgusting, but also the kind of attitude that people usually ascribe to freepers. I know better. Some people are just dickish, regardless of who they claim they vote for. If you do not like me, that is ok. But at least have the common decency to put me on ignore and stop making light of things that could potentially (and for some it was very real thank you very much) be very serious and life changing.

Suffice it to say, you are on ignore, you shall remain on ignore, and if something happened to you, I would actually care. I have the feeling you would not mind if I died. In fact I believe you would celebrate and do a few high fives. That is how little of your humanity I believe you have. And you all know who you are.

which is kind of a relief.

When it falls downtown and not in the mountains we get annoyed.

But it is not even close to ending the drought. There is another system in the gulf of Alaska which might be the next wet system. It is way too early to tell if it will even come down to NorCal, let alone SoCal.

it is irritating that the "news" does not actually show us much of what is happening anymore, altho I did see a shot of a funnel cloud over the weekend...that is unusual for California in winter, isn't it?

I watched market to market this weekend and they showed farmers uprooting entire orchards dead from the drought...I had not realized things were that bad

And the drought is that bad. One thing we should consider is mandating drip irrigation.

The idiots who lit the fire in Glendora should be sentenced with the mudslides taken into account besides the damages from the fire.

Nadin,

How bad was it in east county? My elderly mother is in the lower elevation part of Lakeside and I haven't heard anything about that area. I was caring for a friend with a badly broken ankle since Tuesday and didn't get to hear ten seconds of news the whole time. Now that my friend is doing better after surgery - and 200 miles of travel in snowy conditions, some pretty bad, I have been trying to catch up.

We had a lot, and I mean A LOT of trees down, and accidents. A few houses in Chula even lost their roofs due to winds. All power outages have been restored. Roads are mostly back to normal but houses in Del Cerro had a few mud going in too.

We still have some debris on the roads and the usual places are still flooded (Camino del Rio in Fashion Valley comes to mind)

If you want I can certainly do the drive tomorrow to check on her for you. I mean it.

I have a couple sisters who live near by and if anything was up they would be there in a hurry, we just talk to each other... but my mom and I do. I will call her tomorrow and see how she and her partner are doing. He has family in the county too so I'm sure they would have been checked on by now. I just like having a heads up before i call, they are in their late 80s.

Thanks for the offer, though. I really do appreciate it. if the others in family weren't near, I would ask you to go check. Since you are in the news biz, I figured you'd be a good source!

If lower Lakeside didn't see much or any damage, then I am less worried.

Thanks.

trust me on that. Lakeside had a major vehicle accident with rescue, that even made it to the Nixle. Since they are in advanced age make sure they are on reverse 911, the land line should but if they have a cell make sure it is registered.

I will be chanting for more rain, but will determine from here forward to give more emphasis to the "gentle" part when I'm chanting. But, as we know, we needed that rain badly, and it's a bummer if anyone had any damage or suffering because of it, but we were happy to get it out here in the desert.

Of events such as the ice storm in Atlanta. We even get it why Atlanta was paralyzed. I am critical that they did not tell people to keep kids home. I am positive the after action pointed to that as lessons learned.

Here, fortunately the lesson learned might be cert and shelter activation. I am thinking of contacting the proper authorities with what we learned over the course of the storm. I do not live in Atlanta, I live in San Diego, I can add that grain of salt to the after action, hopefully.

Was helping to dig out somebody's backyard. It was not a public assist, the mud was pressing on the retaining wall. I know it is all kinds of funny and unserious to the folks I referred to in the OP, but that mud led to the home being tagged yellow (some structural damage, but likely salvageable)

So people might have to pay thousands of dollars if they have insurance, or tens of thousands if they do not, to keep their property and fix it. That is a life changing event, pass the laughter tract. It is all kinds of funny to them.

So yes, people making fun with cute smileys are being dickish. It's been established though they were late at the empathy distribution line, perhaps even at the humanity distribution line.

They are the same people, cold comfort I know, that made jokes when the East Coast had a damaging 5.1 quake. They are the exact same ones who make fun every time there us a natural disaster. I have no idea how they can live with themselves, but obviously they can very well. I won't say fully what I think of them and what ails them. Suffice it to say, they will do high fives if any of us dies, or at least if I do.

I am in Vietnam at the moment and the news I get is spotty but I had hoped that we would get a fair amount of rain on the Central Coast. I lived in SD for several years and know the damage that heavy rains can cause as during an El Nino the hill I was living on in Mission Hills started to slide down toward the valley and the 8 below. Very scary!

22. California storms: 12-foot waves, tornado warning, more rain ahead
Mon Mar 3, 2014, 04:26 PM
Mar 2014

A flash flood watch remained in effect for large parts of Southern California amid a powerful rainstorm that will keep the region wet through Sunday.

Officials warned of possible coastal flooding and waves topping 12 feet at some beaches Saturday. In the mountains, snow levels dropped to 5,500 feet. On Friday night, the storms brought lightning and strong winds.

Early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of L.A. County. The weather service posted on Twitter a map showing what it said was "a weak tornado" near Walnut and Azusa. No injuries were reported.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-california-storms-big-waves-tornado-warning-more-rain-ahead-20140301,0,7788366.story#ixzz2uvw27VKr

And I did miss the Tornado Warning in LA. I was waiting for one in San Diego, but the TStorm Cell, thankfully, moved too fast.

Though there was a funnel cloud captured in video near Sacramento per CNN.

According to information from the National Weather Service, that funnel cloud was a real tornado, albeit of the lowest order, EF0, and it touched down twice in rural Yolo County, east of Woodland. It was reported the pairing ducks frolicking in the flooded rice fields were not happy, and one drake was was quoted as quacking, "Fuck CNN".

Whole neighborhoods can and do get buried. We had a very bad case in a little surf community a number of years back, here on the Central Coast. 13 people gone, just like that. One man went out to get ice cream for his family, came back, and they and the whole neighborhood were buried under a mountain of mud with no hope of survival.

On edit: forgot to note that last week's storm wrecked our favorite beachside cafe -- 2 employees trying to secure the patio furniture were pulled out by high waves, one as far as the pier. Lucky to get off with a dislocated shoulder. Two boats were beached close by, either one could have gone right into the restaurant.
