Russia Gives Ukraine ULTIMATUM TO SURRENDER

Last edited Mon Mar 3, 2014, 01:19 PM - Edit history (1)

KIEV, March 3 (Reuters) - Russia's Black Sea Fleet has told Ukrainian forces in Crimea to surrender by 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Tuesday or face a military assault, Interfax news agency quoted a source in the Ukrainian Defence Ministry as saying.

The ultimatum, Interfax said, was issued by Alexander Vitko, the fleet's commander.

The ministry did not immediately confirm the report and there was no immediate comment by the Black Sea Fleet, which has a base in Crimea, where Russian forces are in control.

"If they do not surrender before 5 a.m. tomorrow, a real assault will be started against units and divisions of the armed forces across Crimea," the agency quoted the ministry source as saying.

update:

Russia has issued an ultimatum to Ukrainian forces in the Crimea to clear out by 5 a.m. Tuesday or face a "military storm," according to Russian state-run news agency Interfax, which cited a Ukrainian Defense Ministry source.

Aleksandr Vitko, Russia's Black Sea fleet commander, said that "ff they won't surrender by 5 a.m. tomorrow (10 p.m. ET Monday) there will be a military storm on all UA (Ukraine Armed) military forces all over Crimea," Interfax reported, citing a source in Ukraine's Defense Ministry.

A Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman, Vladislav Seleznyov, told CNN that members of the Russian military are going to Ukrainian military bases in Crimea and demanding surrender. The Russian troops are threatening "harsh reaction" if the Ukrainians don't comply, Seleznyov said.

Ukraine Security Service spokesman Petro Tymchyshyn said there that Ukraine is not aware of any official Russian ultimatum.

2. It's directed at Ukrainian forces in Crimea, not at the whole country. Russian military denies it.

No ultimatum, says the Russian defence ministry, via Vedemosti.

A snap partial translation:

Russia’s defence ministry has denied information that they have given Ukrainian forces in Crimea an ultimatum.

An official defence ministry called the original agency statement about the ultimatum “complete nonsense”, and said no such ultimatum had been given to the Ukrainian military in Crimea.

You would think that threats like this, if they are real, may just as likely be partly psychological warfare to intimidate the Ukrainian military and perhaps to goad it into doing something stupid that would provide a rationale, if he wants it, to expand the conflict.

paramilitary types took over the independent media outlet? They want to make sure it's all pro-Russian propaganda. Typical Putin KGB mentality. Don't let the people think or know the truth. Keep them in fear so they'll do what you want.

Russia's Black Fleet is not Russia
Ukraine's forces in Crimea are not the Ukraine
The Interfax News Agency quoted an unnamed source.
The quote itself is unconfirmed.

Also, the Ukraine's newly appointed head of their navy already said he sides with Russia, shortly after he was appointed.
