What has been the fundamentalist christian reaction?
They must be so freaked out.
Maybe they will boycott Fox.
That would be so funny.

Already, the theocratic Republicans are forming their responses. Especially to the Giordano Bruno segment tonight.
For instance, "He deserved to burn! He was a heretic and they all deserve to burn. And the USA is a Christian country. And Jesus is going to... Mumphridog mortapror scortchastew ARRRRRGH!! Monkey pancakes!!!"
It will happen.

(40,416 posts)And Pat Robertson. And Ted Cruz. And Paul Ryan. And all the rest of the idiotic, anti-science Republicans -- I think it may be all of them.
After all, President Obama introduced it. That's gotta be ultra bad to any Republican. Plus, the first program portrayed the church as being evil, burning Giordano Bruno at the stake. It's just another example of Christian persecution!!!! Bruno deserved it!!!! ARRRRRGH!!!!
Ahem! Sorry. Got away from myself a bit there.

(1,975 posts)but both of my children are homeschooled, and we all go to church on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
They and I have been waiting for this series to start, and we were not disappointed.
On another note just need a clear night out here so we can see Mars, and Saturn. Supposedly March is the closest Mars will be to earth for a loooooong time. We just got a new telescope, a celestron 130slt. Jupiter looks great and the moon is breath taking.

(8,377 posts)There are legitimate questions about the universe that science cannot answer and probably never will. Personally I don't have a problem with those questions remaining un-answerd. But others really need answers to the imponderables. A person can certainly do that, and still be mindful of the knowledge that is available to us for certain. The problem is that hundreds of millions use religions as an excuse for remaining ignorant, so it is probably unavoidable that you will be grouped with them, even if that is not fair.
Separation
(1,975 posts)The part I took issue with was the negative connotation of homeschooled kids. The religious part didn't bother me.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)The vast majority of home schoolers, it seems to me, are the ones who think that fact-based education the schools are dishing out is harmful to their children. A small percentage go the home school route because they think they can provide a better, more complete, well-rounded education then professional teachers in the school environment. And they may be right. Again, that small minority is lumped in with the more general case.

(13,141 posts)I apologize for the broad brush.. should have specified extremist
fundamentalist religious home-schoolers.
I am not against homeschooling, unless it is used as
a way to keep a child ignorant and brainwashed.
I'm not against church unless it's used as an
excuse to hate and judge.
Separation
(1,975 posts)I've never understood the "world is 6000-7000 years old". I've never actually met a person who actually thinks that, not saying they don't exist because I read about those kooks all the time or hear somebody saying it on TV.
As far as homeschooling, it's our only option. My son is Autistic and Schizophrenic and the school here does not have the $$ or services, unlike Florida were we had the McKay Grant. We were able to place him in an Autistic focuses school. He has tendency to get violent, so in the best interests of everyone we homeschool him.

And that's not a bad thing at all. It is speaking to a new generation, and the spokesman is every bit as powerful as Sagan himself.

(8,377 posts)The religious extremists have been hard at work. We can't counter them with one debate or one (or 13) TV shows. But these things a really important. People of intelligence have to stand up and insist that scientific fact be taken seriously. We have to do this every day. We must marginalize the voices of ignorance whether they be Louie Gohmert, Sarah Palin, the Creation Museum, Pat Robertson, the Texas/Kansas book burners or anybody else.
Hats off to both Tyson and Nye. And we need scientists from all quarters to join the battle.

Neil deGrasse Tyson doesn't do the hokey-pokey. As Sir William of Okham might have said, "The hokey-pokey is an unnecessary entity, which thou shan't multiply."
No hokey-pokey in the Cosmos reboot.

(40,416 posts)What's the problem here?
Cosmos is on Fox so that it can get to more people. That's fucking good!
I live in very rural western Michigan. There is no NBC affiliate within my roof antenna's reach. But I can receive two Fox affiliates, both of which broadcast Cosmos tonight.
That's what this is about, bringing science, raw and unclothed, to the masses. Neil deGrasse Tyson has already told the story of Giordano Bruno, burned at the stake for heresy for saying that there were other planets with life in the universe, and that the stars are other suns.
Where else would one want such heresies broadcast than on Fox?
Can hardly wait for the Republucan responses.

(2,322 posts)...I was pretty dismayed at all the ads for Fox News and ads for those they believe watch that news. It was a real weird thing to see with Cosmos being introduced by Obama and discussing the importance of questioning everyone, separation of church and state, evolution, etc.
Those watching Cosmos aren't likely going to watch Fox News and vice versa, so a lot of the ads seemed badly aimed. Though I suppose there are scientifically minded Nascar fans....
Which is to say, I recommend watching this show on Nat-Geo, if only to escape the Fox News ads. I'm certainly going to from now on.
