...but I imagine that in the first case it might be that one's hypothetical advocate has failed to notice that their position isn't being lent the credence the advocate feels it deserves because their correpsondent actually already knows better and the advocate hasn't noticed, and in the second one's hypothetical advocate is up against someone who is just pig-ignorant and can't be bothered paying attention.

The difference would seem to me to depend largely on the advocate's perceptions of the correspondent, not the position advocated.
