stray dog transformed in minutes by hair cut - from looking like 'pile of trash'

Staggering transformation of rescued Cavalier King Charles after passers-by thought he was a pile of trash

His rescuers thought at first he was a discarded toy or even a piece of garbage - but on closer inspection they realized it was a little Cavalier King Charles having a seriously ruff time of it.

Found roaming the streets of Montreal last week, the little mut's coat had grown so thick and caked in filth that he was almost unrecognizable as a pedigree dog.

Picked up by the Quebec Society for the Protection of Animals and given a bath and a very close shave, the dog was transformed from hobo to regal in a matter of moments.

His rescuers estimated that more than 50-percent of the decrepit animal they were staring at was due to the size of his fur and cutting it off proved to be more difficult than they first imagined.

Nighttime: A well deserved rest what was just what was needed after that arduous but necessary trim

She was a mess...nothing like this. She loves wearing sweaters in the winter, they cause hair mats. We keep them on a low shelf in our bedroom, when the temperature gets around 40 she goes and gets one and brings it to us. We live in a circa 1902 house and it can be a little drafty on the floor.

How sad and happy at the same time. That dog will be adopted. ..I would adopt it today and pay for it's flight, but I doubt they will have trouble finding someone closer.

We have a rescued Sheltie who's tail and back legs were matted together when they found him. He was completely shaved when we brought him home, but it all grew back and he loves to be brushed.

I hate it when people don't take care of their pets.

He had a long day, but is just handsome! A much-needed rest and a clean coat probably made him feel brand new.

This small brown bush walked into my yard and upon closer inspection it was some kind of dog. I washed the mud off him and completely shaved him and still have him 9 years later. He's a fantastic little guy.

My oldest daughter rescue's when ever she can. One time she drove to the far east of Ohio (I think it took her about 4 hrs. one way ) from lower southeast Michigan to rescue 4 pet's online that were scheduled to be put down the next day. She has a friend that owns a pet grooming place that cut's their hair, bathes them, nail's, etc.... for free. Two of them looked just like that breed in the picture, super matted but not quite as bad. Her grooming friend did the work's on them & they flew around her shop so happy to have someone take care of them. My daughter get's them spayed/neutered, shot's out of her own money all the time, she is always broke of course. She found WONDERFUL home's for the 2 of them, she screen's people worse than anybody I know. If you don't pass her test you won't get her dog's or cat's! She rescue's locally as well....... She has a huge heart for kid's & pet's.....

Rescued a Rottweiler ten years ago on the east side of Saginaw. Took her home bathed and brushed her and she crawled into bed that first night with my nine year old son. After that day she watched over myself and my son most of all like a guardian angel with very long fangs and was not timid in showing them off if she felt any danger to my son. Put her down two years ago, damned shame. Rescued dogs make the best dogs because they now what you did for them and will be your most loyal friend in life.

But I wouldn't allow a strange dog to be in bed with a small child, ever. I've seen what was left of an 8 year old girl who was allowed to be alone with a new (to the family) adult Rottweiler for 10 minutes. I don't wish that horror on anyone. The ME said she died within the first few seconds of the attack, so her suffering was brief, albeit terrifying I'm sure.

I know what you are saying and that never would have been first instinct either but you would have to have seen the two of them together. My wife was like you are not going to let her sleep with him are you? I told her look at them and god help anybody that tries to crall through his window in the middle of the night. She kept getting up all night long to go check on them and the only thing that changed was who was laying on
who. After that night my wife never worried again about that dog.

... not as much hair as in the OP photo - but quite a lot he looked pretty bad and he had to be shaved.

Unfortunately we didn't take any photos before he was shaved..

It took a while for his hair to grow out but when it did he became awesomely cute

Penny is half Cavalier, half American Eskimo. Bailey is half cavalier, half chihuahua.

I hope that little pup finds a good home.

One of mine came from an overloaded shelter - a chow mix with matted fur everywhere. She'd been there for 2 years. Gorgeous coat now, but with her running the farm, I cave in and go at her with the scissors once in awhile.
