The difference between good regulation and bad regulation

I've seen a lot of alarmingly pro big brother, pro nanny-state proponent posts lately. This is concerning. Here are some examples:


Laws that ensure we all have equal rights in all aspects of our lives, and laws that ensure those rights are not infringed (good regulation!)

Laws that prohibit adults from doing things because the State has decided it knows better than you: examples would be the large soda ban, the e-cig puritans, and the marijuana prohibitionists (bad regulation!)
