In every case, assume the absolute worst about the US and it's leaders while simultaneously giving other nations complete benefit of the doubt.
Any nations aligned with the US should be viewed unfavorably compared to nations with oppositional policies and politics relative to the US.

So it just means, "that's it". I guess you would have to be old to get it. The poster that said you asked for it was alluding to the first part of the slogan.

(27,833 posts)While I believe that the anti-American rhetoric is sometimes over the top, your point about anti-Russian sentiment brings to mind a more general issue. When the USSR collapsed we had a perfect opportunity to promote world peace by embracing Russia as a friend.
But instead we rubbed their noses in it from that day forward. The end of the Cold War marked the beginning of a campaign to start it right back up again.

(4,856 posts)We have had a chance all along to unite our two countries and instead have squandered it. This approach was led by the usual suspects...mainly Cheney and the neocons..who incidentally are the main culprits pushing for US involvement in the Ukraine crisis.
http://www.globalresearch.ca/neocons-and-the-ukraine-coup/5370405
Excerpt:
American neocons helped destabilize Ukraine and engineer the overthrow of its elected government, a regime change on Russias western border. But the coup and the neo-Nazi militias at the forefront also reveal divisions within the Obama administration.
More than five years into his presidency, Barack Obama has failed to take full control over his foreign policy, allowing a bureaucracy shaped by long years of Republican control and spurred on by a neocon-dominated U.S. news media to frustrate many of his efforts to redirect Americas approach to the world in a more peaceful direction.
But Obama deserves a big dose of the blame for this predicament because he did little to neutralize the government holdovers and indeed played into their hands with his initial appointments to head the State and Defense departments, Hillary Clinton, a neocon-leaning Democrat, and Robert Gates, a Republican cold warrior, respectively.
Even now, key U.S. diplomats are more attuned to hard-line positions than to promoting peace. The latest example is Ukraine where U.S. diplomats, including Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt, are celebrating the overthrow of an elected pro-Russian government.

To do what? To vote for what? To believe in what? To analyze what?
To these people, pointing out the failures of whoever happens to be in charge or in the spotlight at any given moment is, for them, the end of the game, mission accomplished. You're right, detailed solutions ARE complicated. And maybe it does require access to information not available to the general public, but without a detailed solution, there is no further that this brand of hyperliberalism can go.
The "hopey-changey" brigade who thinks that anyone who believes that Obama is doing anything positive is a sheep or a moron or a fascist tool are the biggest hypocrites of all. Why? Because if "hope and change" aren't going to accomplish anything, then "concern and dissent" types are fixing to do even less, and quite honestly, that's fine given how much personal responsibility any of them will take for the ramifications of their positions.
Fuck details. I'll take a vague, chunky, poorly-conceived idea that might seem to follow from the big idea as a next step in lieu of a detailed solution. But I can't even get that. Right now, those on DU that are looking for their internet validation need only the following formula:
1) Bash Obama
2) ????
3) Profit!
Until that changes, and I hear an actual call to action that doesn't involve something like "wake up, sheeple" as it's primary raison d'etre, the whole lot of them can go pound sand.

DU is full of talk and put downs of the 1% - 15%, some of whom are truly decent people that happen to be rich, either self made or due to circumstances of their birth. There is a large hatred for capitalism on DU, yet an informed capitalist society like in Germany or in the Nordic countries has proven to be the best applicable system in the history of humankind. What I want to see from Progressives is that they help seize the fucking initiative from super rich right wingers by taking control of capitalism and making it work for everyone in society. The best way to deal with the Kochs is to push those assholes o the sidelines by having more resources of all types than they have.

This kind of post is exactly what is dragging DU down IMO. Instead of debating in whatever threads there are, over whatever topics are being discussed; or starting an OP about a topic -- instead, just make some general comment about those OTHER nasty DUers who don't approach things the way you do, make up a strawman position, complain about it, preen as though you and you alone know all the answers. No positive contribution to the discourse.

(4,717 posts)Has steadily devolved over the course of years. I feel no obligation to carry that water myself.
I find that the reason it has is because reason is no longer respected. Emotion and outrage carry the day and that is all it has become. Most people who "find" this place now are here because they like that sort of thing. People who had something to offer left in disgust quite some time ago. Those who might be contributive know better than to stay long.
I am glad you put me in that group. It means that at least you've been paying attention. It's not all I know how to do, though.
You see, of those disgustipated people who have left I mentioned earlier, I am probably one of the last holdouts of that "old guard". Maybe I'm inertial. Maybe I lack self-respect. Despite myself, I keep thinking that the people on DU are good people who are worth the time and trouble to converse with. Every day I am here I am made to regret that thought because, well, it's like trying to have a deep conversation with Frankenstein. USA BAAAAAAD! EVERYONE ELSE GOOOOOOOD!
I'm not the binary thinker around here. I'm not the one suggesting that the person who disagrees is stupid. I'm not the one so grandly certain of my moral rectitude that I can't entertain the idea that I might be fucking wrong about something. No, I'll leave the moral superiority and intellectual certitude to the late arrivals and play with them like a cat playing with a mouse.
DU has been, since the election of Barack Obama, all about who you're siding with one day to the next. Watching everyone fall all over themselves to decry Obama, or laud Snowden and Greenwald, and I hear, these days that Scarlett Johannsen of all people has made the shit list, someone's making that the cause celebre. Tomorrow it will be someone else with something else which is supposed to jack us in to the truth and jack us up to a snarling outrage. That and $4.00 will get you a venti at Starbucks infused with a splash of donkey piss.
This is the low hanging fruit, the bargain basement, the swirling turdbowl of discourse, and you think I should take the time to raise it with thoughtful commentary?
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)..."This is the low hanging fruit, the bargain basement, the swirling turdbowl of discourse, and you think I should take the time to raise it with thoughtful commentary?"
Okay, a couple of things.
First: if you truly believe that DU is what you say in the above excerpt, then WHY THE HELL DO YOU SPEND ANY OF YOUR PRECIOUS TIME HERE?
Second: when it comes to raising the level of discourse, if YOU shouldn't take the time to raise it, then WHO THE HELL SHOULD?
We are all responsible for the level of discourse here. And BTW, trying to maintain a reasonable level of discourse does not mean there will not be heated disagreements; there will It's part of what makes political discourse interesting: people are passionate about their political beliefs.
Anyway, regarding whether any of us should bother to try and raise the discourse here, I would like to direct you to this quote:
"Be the change that you wish to see in the world" -- Mahatma Gandhi
ElboRuum
(4,717 posts)1) That was already explained. "Maybe I'm inertial. Maybe I lack self-respect. Despite myself, I keep thinking that the people on DU are good people who are worth the time and trouble to converse with."
2) Those who in the name of their own moral certitude over the past years reduced it to shit levels. That's who. DU didn't get like this overnight, it took several years of "concern trolling" and hand-wringing and being "decidedly pessimistic" about the current administration all in the name of being a Good Liberal (TM) to get it there. They can pull out the shovel and start digging, I'll be along when I can see the floor again.
I don't mind heated disagreements, it's when that is ALL YOU HAVE LEFT you have jumped the shark. When supposedly intelligent people can't tell the difference between "holding feet to the fire" and "being a pessimistic dick" you aren't talking politics anymore, and it certainly isn't "interesting", at least not to this old salt. You are talking about egoism and narcissism, pure and simple. And don't hold me responsible for that level of discourse, I've tried my damnedest to have conversations which didn't devolve into some level of flamefest from which nothing could be extracted of value. Every single time, some narcissistic jackass that couldn't see past his/her own sense of righteousness and entitlement went 100% feral.
Gandhi lived when "nanny nanny boo boo, stick your head in doo doo" was relegated to the whimsy of children, having no place in the reasoned adult world. I am the change I wish to see in the world. An adult who acts like one. Oh, I'm not perfect. I lapse, but I do pretty well on balance. The rest need to do some catching up to stop being "colicky baby", "angry disaffected teenager", or some other childish persona as their first reaction to someone saying "you're wrong".
Until then, I'll hold myself only to the standard others do. They deserve no more than that.

(2,347 posts)They follow whatever line Russia takes.
Pretty sure this is a coincidence. The real basis is that they think they're standing up for the "Global South". Mostly that diaphanous concept encompasses countries that are, to one degree or another, commodity exporters and therefore held back by the old resource curse.
It just so happens that Russia shares this trait with those countries and therefore shares their interests. That these poor countries can only advance by shedding the resource curse and getting economies that do more than ship raw materials and energy to the industrialized world never actually penetrates the bubble these folks live in, even though there is one outstanding example of how to do it correctly smack in the middle of Latin America: Brazil.
Of course Brazil has problems too, but it works them out. Maduro does actually realize this to some extent, as he correctly, in a speech of his, id'd his 1% as a bunch of rentiers, whereas what Venezuela needs are real entrepreneurs. But to get to where he has some of the latter he would need to first rein in the galloping corruption his country swims in, which of course is a direct consequence of the resource curse. It's hard, but everything in life is hard. Patronization by first world radicals won't get him where he wants to be. Patronization is easy. Getting rid of corruption is the hard work that has to be done, there and elsewhere in Latin America, and of course in Russia as well, which is a real poster boy for how the resource curse works. The head of Gazprom, their energy giant, sold all his shares in that company right before Russia went into Crimea. That defines a country ruled by its rentiers.

(37,573 posts)there does seem to be a large group who do "hate America". Sounds cliche, but sadly it is true.
It may have mellowed a bit though.
At least I do not remember the usual flood of "America has always sucked" threads to celebrate the last Thanksgiving. Maybe something else was distracting us, or distracting me.
BTW - it's = it is. Possessive it has NO apostrophe.
So that is two strikes against you.
First, you don't hate America
and second, you made a mistake in grammer.

they get all nasty and insulting.
Edit.. You've hit a nerve.. the nastier they are the more they hate it that you've exposed their lazy reactions to the USofAmerica and its leaders. "Up with Putin/Down with President Obama "
"In every case, assume the absolute worst about the US and it's leaders while simultaneously giving other nations complete benefit of the doubt.
Any nations aligned with the US should be viewed unfavorably compared to nations with oppositional policies and politics relative to the US."

Of course they are all crying that the OTHER 'yes' voters are too scared to vote...can you believe how delusional these fringe elements are? Of course desperate people do desperate things.
Anything to have their narrative stick! Like shit on the wall...so far nothing has and I am LOVING watching them expose themselves as shit stirrers and nothing more.

(15,741 posts)More than five years into his presidency, Barack Obama has failed to take full control over his foreign policy, allowing a bureaucracy shaped by long years of Republican control and spurred on by a neocon-dominated U.S. news media to frustrate many of his efforts to redirect Americas approach to the world in a more peaceful direction.

(24,096 posts)rules don't mean anything to certain people here - they are protected for some reason. So when I hear this 'good faith' remark over and over I think of how a poster here threatened the life of another member and was able to weasel his way back in. And that was the second ban that was 'forgiven'.
so if someone like PW sneaks in under another name, well I'm not quite ready to get the pitch fork out for that trivial misdemeanor compared.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)reason to do it. But to be fair they can do it for any reason. I can't speak to why some are allowed to stay longer than others. My guess is they just had enough of OW and they wznted to enforce the new rules on suspension and socks.
