One of the first things I have noticed is how quiet my apartment is without Mousie. I was befuddled when I first realized this. Mousie didn't make much noise and yowl around at the top of her lungs.
I wondered if it was simply psychological. There was one less presence so maybe it seemed emptier and quieter. I wasn't sure.
Then it hit me. I talked to Mousie all the time. She responded in different ways. Scat is deaf and while I still talk to her, it's minimal.
Mousie was a good listener.
Sigh.....

(81,265 posts)You set up a mighty fine household for the quadrupeds. One of 'em out there would LOVE to be rescued by a loving foster parent like you.

(110,159 posts)And that is a good point that it is quiet cause you are not talking.
A couple new babies will keep you so busy, it will make this easier. Without ever losing the special if mousy.

With in a week a stray showed up on my porch and we became buddies. A male that looked a lot like my old friend. I figured I had the best of both worlds, a new cat that stayed outside. Then one morning the wind chill hit 40 below and I said "come on in".
Seems they find us.

(22,271 posts)Kittens need someone to play with and sometimes the older cats just aren't up to it. My newest, Alaska, has Erica (8 years old) and they play all day (and half the night).
Erica has taught Alaska everything she knows: how to open one drawer, crawl to the back of the drawer and open the next one up from the back and then crawl in that one. That drawer is the one in which I keep my (what were) clean dishtowels. She taught her how to hang 20 on my window screen and how to jump up on the bar and shove everything onto the floor. Alaska, however is developing her own tricks. She's fond of putting her "mousie" (a stuffed mouse she constantly plays with) in her food bowl before she takes a nap.
But for goddess sake DON'T LET THEM GO OUTSIDE!11!!!1111

(81,265 posts)Even when they're sick and/or old and you know it's coming, it STILL isn't any easier.
I highly recommend litter mates. We have two cats we got as kittens, when we noticed it was these two who just stuck together - in a big pen with lots of little rescues all climbing all over the place. My husband picked one up to cuddle it a little and the other one looked so lonely without it. We couldn't take just one!
What a FABULOUS idea that turned out to be!!! We'll probably never do it differently again! When they're very little, they keep each other company, sleep together, explore together, play together, groom each other, fight with each other, when you go out they STILL have each other there for company and they don't feel abandoned or alone because they have that familiar sib around all the time. It's just very very dear to see and to watch! It's just the greatest!!!!
It will lift your heart and your spirits for sure. And it WILL help you heal more quickly.
When you're ready.
Just - when you're ready.

(40,416 posts)Speaking to Scat may do a world of good to all concerned, as I am sure grits is doing.
Hope you are doing well, grits.

(36,464 posts)When our pup passed, the cats disappeared. We only saw them at meal time. I asked my husband one day, "Didn't we use to have two cats?" Next day we went to the pound & adopted an older dog. Viola! We had two cats again!
Good on the decision to adopt two new little ones. Mousie would have wanted that - for you to give others a good home & for them to give you companionship. Big, big hug to you for Mousie.

(17,111 posts)The kittens kept CT on her toes. They also added a lot to my life.
After that experience, I want another pair. If Scat is too grumpy to play with them, they will have each other.
