I'll bet he carpools to work and drives his wife's mini-van more often than he does the nine year old Ford Escort his parent's gave him when they bought a new car.

I thought it deserved its own OP. Then I noticed that it was written before that Cadillac ad.

These issues should be talked about much more often, so thanks for the extra thread.

had to give it up as a lost cause.

Of course, I never tried the meat-packing plant.

I am not sure this guy would be so content if he was working at a meat packing plant. Or at the local wal-mart.

Working in insurance in a small town, he's probably in the top 10%, certainly in the top 20% in that town.

I found people like this in Iowa. In fact, Iowa seemed to be loaded with them. I joked that most Iowans can pick up a rock and throw it and hit the house where they grew up. Yes, it's nice for them, but kinda hard to fit in then, if you just moved there, like I did. When I told Iowans I was from South Dakota, many of them said, without a hint of irony "you are a long way from home". To them, I guess, their neighboring state is about the same thing as Oregon, Alaska, Maine or Florida - a long way from home.

One comedienne joked "If you did not make friends with them in junior high, it's already too late." And she was living in Des Moines!

But ultimately I left Iowa because I could not find a real job there either. Spent three years working as a temp. Had a bit of a revelation though, when I was interviewing for a job. It was a non-temp job, but I realized, mid-interview, that pay-wise, it was worse than my temp job.
