I bought some "clamato" juice recently, its...different. It is basically tomato juice with spices, and a hint of clam juice. I haven't decided if I like it or not.

I'll start with the mild red pepper and then switch back and forth between the anchovies and the oysters.
The oysters are bland and the anchovies are salty, so they cancel each other out.
I started eating these as a part of the Perricone diet, and I actually developed a craving for them. Plus, eating fish early in the day makes you feel less hungry throughout the day.
I lost 25 pounds in about six months eating them, and I've kept the weight off for over two years.
There's a lot of sodium in the anchovies, so I wouldn't recommend them to everyone.

(30,481 posts)I do love tomato juice with wostershire, celery salt, pepper, green olives, celery, and Vodka. If you can get the taste for it, go with it. Full of good stuff.

(23,664 posts)It tastes like crap though, if you mix it with dark beer, so the best mixer is a can of run of the brewery cheap American swill like Coors or Budweiser.

If you ever hang out with Mexicans you'll notice that they usually keep some around. Thats how i got started, a girl named Valedia told me it woukd help me get better at spanish. It may have worked.

Great with Sunday brunch in the summer.
It's much more popular in Canada, than in the US.

(4,466 posts)Various restaurants I would go into at first I would ask for a Caesar(the drink) and they would bring me a salad.
Realizing my dilemma I began clarifying my order. It was very rare that I would find a place that made them.
The Keg did, but being a Canadian company, it was kind of their obligation.
There was another seafood place we used to go to a few years back in South Centre that has since closed that used to make them as well.
I really like them because I find it a nice refreshing, almost light drink with a wonderful kick!

Beer and Clamato is simply called a "Clamato", often served with salt, lime, and tabasco.

(2,340 posts)What is it anyway.
How do they get it?
Do they put clams in a juicer or is it just the sea water from the inside of clams?
Is there any nutritional value?
Why would anyone want to ruin perfectly good tomato juice?
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)I would not recommend drinking it straight, but is serves many uses.
But I'll answer your questions first...
What is it? - It is the liquid (water) from inside of the clam.
How do they get it? - Depends. Some will strain the liquid from fresh, raw shucked clams, while others cook the clam until it opens and then strain the juice. They do not put the clams in a juicer.
Yes, there is nutritional value. But not all that good. It is mostly sodium (about 100mg per tbsp), then protein and iron are lower on the list.
Now to the big question... What is the purpose of clam juice?
It is great in libations.
For example: Low Tide Martini, La Brea Tar Pit, Bloody Mary, or an Acapulco Clam Digger.
Food.
It can be used as a seasoning in place of salt, if you are looking for a hint of a brine flavor.
It can also be used in place of seafood stock in soups. In fact, (IMHO) clam chowder, or any shellfish bisque cannot be made without it.
My recipe for straight up steamers is quite simple, but requires clam juice. Otherwise the flavors are not there. I take chopped shallot along with minced garlic and lightly saute them in EV olive oil, then deglaze with a 50/50 mix of white wine and clam juice. Add the clams (scrubbed clean), and wait for them to just start to open, it then add a lot of butter and let it melt down while the clams are opening. Finish with a splash of white wine and chopped basil. I recommend enjoying with a good toasted garlic bread for soaking up the broth.
Woo science claims it can cure hangovers, digestive issues, headaches, and IIRC one doctor in the late 1800's used it as a therapy to cure delirium in a patient.

(2,340 posts)I will try it in a Bloody Mary, and go on from there.

I decided to buy a bottle about 3 three ago. Not as much clam juice or tomato juice... but I still like it. between this and V-* these are my go drinks for Sunday morning breakfast.
It's a strange drink, but I love it.

(21,020 posts)I view this as being on equal footing with that abomination called "Manhattan Clam Chowder".
No clam should ever be anywhere near a tomato.
Clam chowder...flour and butter and cream and some other ingredients
Whole belly fried clams...tartar sauce
that's it.

(46,179 posts)I had the tv going while I was doing chores this week; it was on the cooking channel, which is an odd choice for me since I don't much like cooking, but there you go. It was a "throwdown with Bobby Flay" segment somewhere on the east coast about lobster club sandwiches. A whole 30 minutes which left me thinking, "I wouldn't eat either of those."
Why? Because they both dressed the lobster with mayo.
I despise mayo. Mayo touches nothing that passes my lips. I don't use it to make anything. It can't be found in my home. Why would anyone ruin lobster with mayo? Rhetorical question...whatever the answer is, I don't really want to know.
So...clams? I'm a left-coaster. I like clam chowder, just the way you describe. I like fried clams, too...but no tartar sauce. Throwing some pickles, onions, and seasonings into mayo doesn't make it NOT mayo.
"Manhattan Clam Chowder?" Tried it. Didn't hate it, but didn't have it again. Given a choice, it's New England Clam Chowder by a mile.
