(HuffPost) If we learned nothing else during the 2012 election, it is that some of us are makers, hard-working folk solely responsible for America's prosperity, and others are takers, who want the federal government to pay for luxuries like food and health care.
What may come as some surprise is where these two warring tribes tend to live. The states with elected officials most likely to espouse anti-taker sentiments -- i.e., Republican-dominated states -- are the most dependent on federal spending, while returning the least to Washington in the way of tax dollars.
That's according to the consumer finance site Wallet Hub, which crunched federal tax and spending data and then ranked states from most to least dependent on Uncle Sam. In the map below, green states are the least dependent, while red states -- appropriately -- are the most dependent.
The "makingest" state, according to the analysis, is Delaware. Delawareans -- this is really what they call themselves -- pay $1 in taxes for every 50 cents they get back from the federal government. Delaware also has the lowest rate of federal contracts received, as a proportion of federal tax dollars paid. And the state has the highest gross domestic product per capita, at $72,642.

(29 posts)Mississippi is one of most dependent on federal dollars. We've got entire agencies within state government that are federally funded. The Mississippi Department of Employment Security was days away from shutting down in October. Schools are heavily funded from federal sources - in some districts, 100% of the school lunch program is paid by the feds. A surprising percentage of teaching staff are funded by grants.
We have a number of military bases (including a Navy base 160 mi inland - thank you, Trent Lott!). Stennis Space Center (NASA) is on the coast. The National Guard is a huge employer. And it's not just weekend warriors, there seem to be quite a few who are full-time with the Guard.
The effort to force the U.S. government into default was utterly stupid. Especially for a state that runs on federal money.

I was watching a news show on California and, per person, Modoc County is the greatest taker in California and one of the most libertarian-Republican

I love when people on disability and social security say how much they hate the federal gubbmint.
I have had a neighbor on disability and food stamps - a younger woman whom I've seen dig fence posts and such - complain to me about all the "takers who don't wanna work." AS I drug my old body off to my job to tear it up a little more doing very physical work, with no health care and no help from the gubbmint for me.
the irony of the whole thing just made my head spin.
But THEY are entitled to that gubbmint money. Only the blacks, you see, are evil takers of gubbmint funds, according to the very Caucasian takers I know who don't want to work. I will never get it.
