"The French Aristocracy Never Saw it Coming Either"

SUN MAR 30, 2014 AT 11:26 AM PDT
bySteven DFollow

...............Unless, the Democrats make this election one between a progressive vision for our country and the one Republicans have been running on since Ronald Reagan took office, they will lose seats in the Senate and they will not regain a majority in the House. The Republican base will turn out this Fall. But will enough people turn out for Democrats, especially young people? What are Democrats offering them that will make not only a short term improvement in their lives but will also give them hope for their future? I don't believe most people turn out to vote in an off year election simply because a party claims it is the lesser of two evils. Dems need to energize those voters, make them into believers in the Democratic Party's cause, not put them to sleep with endless bable about deficits and debt relief or other debates in which young people are not invested. All that will do is make them feel their vote is worthless, regardless of the R or D beside the name on the ballot.

The longer the Democratic Party, as a whole, is content to waffle on the fundamental issues of our times, the less likely they are to convince the young voters they need to win elections to show up at the polls. Ask yourself what does the Democratic Party stand for? Then ask yourself if the principles and policies they propose offer any hope to the great mass of voters that electing Dems will make a positive difference in their lives? Right now, I believe most voters would answer that last question "no," and that would include many people who will make the effort to vote and pull the switch in November for the Democratic ticket.

A progressive national campaign is something that can be discussed in 2016, when we have a national candidate. In THIS election, in the States where our candidates are vulnerable (I'm talking about the Senate; there's no way, even by inspiring the base that we're taking back the House), specifically, Louisiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, Arkansas, Montana and Alaska, a progressive surge isn't going to make the difference.

Doesn't even make sense. How does it promote the storage company?

There's not going to be an equivalent to the French Revolution.

From wikipedia:

Manhattan Mini Storage prides itself on "identifying what matters to New Yorkers,"[5] and markets itself as "an extension of your home where you can keep the things you want to keep but can't quite accommodate in your tight Manhattan apartment."[1] The company is known for its controversial, political, and pop culture- related advertisements that speak to the people of New York City, such as one in which it made fun of Paris Hilton using the tagline: "Your closet's so shallow, it makes Paris look deep."[6] In one of their previous advertisements, they pictured a gay man with the tagline: "Don't make us send 5 queer guys to your place."[7] In phone booths, the company has posted stickers saying: "Your closet’s scarier than Bush’s agenda," "Your closet is so narrow it makes Cheney look liberal," as well as "We have more wiggle room than Herman Cain's morals." A billboard, with a picture of chihuahua wearing pearls and the words "Your closet's so shallow it makes Paris look deep", attracted a cease and desist letter from her lawyer.[8]

If it's not defensive it's relying on abstract concepts like "Be a Factivist" (see website).

The Democratic Party needs a NEW COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY IMMEDIATELY. It needs to be relevant to the middle class and offer a strong benefits. Be a Factivist? That's HORRIBLE.

much like the one that has, hopefully, finally worn itself out from overuse. Words, we've heard enough words to last a lifetime. Best way to judge a politician we've learned, is not by their words, but by their actions including how they vote on issues.

We are told every election that 'cannot do this, cannot do that'. But the Republicans we are told at the same time 'CAN and WILL do what they want. Something has been very wrong with this message.

I assume the latest word 'factivist' no doubt applauded in some think tank as 'brilliant' to slap down any hopes that maybe NOW after all the elections where we were told to be 'pragmatic' and just wait, that OUR time has finally come. But to be 'factivist' about it, that would require politicians who actually WANTED what the people want.

The French in 1789 didn't have Fox News telling people that their sad lot in life was there own fault and any help from the Government was socialism.

With the GOP, we'll always get a corporatist.

With the Democrats, we'll get mostly corporatists and at least a few populists.

instead of a bunch of stodgy old conservative curmudgeons who will just insure the status quo of more and more young people sliding into poverty, as the polarization of continues to accelerate like a going off a cliff to hell with the wind behind it.

We give the kids something to get excited about, a chance at something really better, they'll turn out.

country today:

1) "free" trade which has destroyed the part of our economy that could employ many of our unemployed and underemployed workers and which has forced young people to invest their time and money in college if they hope someday to be part of the middle class.

2) the Bush era changes in the Bankruptcy Code which, in this recession, have made it much harder for the middle class to discharge debt (especially student loans) and get on with their lives.

Corporations can still discharge onerous debt in bankruptcy, but it is harder for the middle class to do it especially if the debt is related to education

The Bankruptcy Code needs to be changed again to favor the middle class, and we should not enter into any more trade agreements that will result in the export of our jobs and the import of cheap products produced by cheap labor.
