what's in the new $250 burger sold in ny

A new pan-Asian restaurant is hoping to add 'another food dimension' to Manhattan's Midtown with the ultimate fast food indulgence: a $250 burger.

Filled with sautéed duck fois gras, beluga caviar, shaved truffle, pancetta, a Kobe beef patty and the chef's secret sauce, the mouthwatering burger is the priciest item on Beer and Buns new menu, which is set to open March 20th at The Court St Giles Premier Hotel.

'I wanted to charge $1,000 for it; it's expensive to make,' the restaurant's chef Wisit Panpinyo told MailOnline. 'But I had to lower the price so that our customers can afford it!'
.

Mr Panpinyo also emphasized how important mache greens and a ripe heirloom tomato is for the burger's overall flavor.

'They add a sweetness to the more luxurious ingredients,' he said, adding that the tomato he was slicing for today's burger cost $12 from the local market.

The shaved truffles ($120 for a small ball) and beluga caviar ($50 for a large spoonful) sit atop a large slice of duck foie gras sauteed in Sauternes ($80).

'I use a big chuck because when it's cooked it shrivels a bit,' said Mr Panpinyo.

spend $250 on a *HAMBURGER* has too much money, in my not so humble opinion. I could feed myself for 2 months on $250, and eat good, too!

I don't "hate the rich" or any of that stuff. I figure if a person can do very well for themselves, the more power to them... generally as long as they're making it legally and not harming anyone. I will admit to having more respect for the "self made" rich, who worked their way up out of nothing, or made a lucky investment or designed and made a product than I do for the ones born with a silver spoon in their mouths and grow up on trust funds from Daddy, Mommy or Grandparents.

I've had money before, a pretty good chunk from a lawsuit settlement, but it didn't change me. I made good money before the settlement too, but I always lived BELOW my means. I've never owned a brand new vehicle, even though I could have *and* paid cash for it. I wound up losing my ass on a bad investment though, and now live month to month on disability. Right now, I'm waiting for the 3rd to come (pay day) so I can pay my bills, then decide if I can buy myself a pair of "slightly used" boots from the Boot Barn at the flea market for $30, or if I need to save it to make sure I have enough gas to get to my monthly doctors appointment and pay the $6 co-pay for my meds.

IF I still had the money, before I paid $250 for a burger, I'd round up a bunch of the homeless and hungry around here and take them to eat somewhere. That's just the I am, though.

Peace,

Ghost

"A Million Little Fibers" on Comedy Central tonight. The episode is a parody of Oprah when she plugged a fictitious book as reality as "book of the month" several years ago. The episode also ribbed Geraldo Rivera and his investigative reporting a la the opening of Al Capone's vault.

I'm kind of surprised that you didn't join in last night on this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024752289

I wasn't expecting everybody to get such a hoot out of it since I was merely curious. Quite a few people got some good laughs in though so I guess that everybody needed some comic relief after all the serious and contentious threads throughout the last week.

Take care my friend--I'm going to do a quick sweep of Texas media and head to bed soon.

The chef requires that the imported-from-Japan atrocity called a Kobe Beef Patty must be cooked medium rare. This is 126 degrees F. (I looked it up.) He says you can't taste the exceptional quality of his beef if it's cooked to a higher temperature.

The state of New York requires that all ground beef, or foods containing ground beef, be cooked to 158 degrees F. This is within two degrees of well-done.

hamburger meat. Most states allow ground steak to be cooked to any temp. desired. This burger is made of ground Kobe, so that's how they can cook it medium rare. Most good restaurants make their burgers with ground steak these days, and I like mine medium rare. It gives the burger a lot more flavor.

...because it's expensive to make, but he had to make it affordable for his customers. Uh, huh. I think it is safe to assume that he isn't trying to run a charity, so that $250 cost he settled on has to at least cover his costs. Which means he is comfortable with the concept of making over $750 profit on a burger if he thought his customers could afford it. Clearly the man needs better heeled customers, not riff-raff nickle and diiming it in order to scrape together $250 for a meal. Probably they'll demand a free glass of water also, those cheapskates.

I'll stick to the local burger joint. It's downtown and they make great cheese burgers with fries and a coke for less than 3 bucks.

And speaking of ridiculously priced hamburgers, I went to a new place that opened just a few months ago that has organic fast food just to try it. It ended up costing me about $35 for 2 orders of what would be a #1 at Burger King (2 burgers, 2 fries and 2 drinks). It wasn't really worth it. The food was good, but who has that kind of money now-a-days?

We love 'fine dining', but the cost makes it only a once or twice a year event!
