If your state's a state in the South, then The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is why those Democrats suddenly switched to the Republican party.

Poor Whites of that era couldn't abide by a fellow Southerner like Lyndon Baines Johnson doing away with the evil system of Jim Crow that oppressed those Negroes.
Ironically they joined the party that freed those same Negroes from chattel slavery 100 years earlier.

The Solid South's still the Solid South. They just switched labels.
