(19,161 posts)For example, I think it should be legal to tackle the base runner (but the only player allowed to tackle is the one in possession of the ball at the time).
That, and in odd-numbered innings, the bases would be run "traditionally" (counterclockwise). But in even-numbered innings, all play would be clockwise. Except for the fourth and seventh innings, when the runner may touch the bases in any order they wish (but all bases must be touched for the run to count).
I've left out the part about oiling the base paths and requiring three cows in the outfield, but I know these changes have to be introduced gradually.

He forgot that their home opener last week was a day game, so I got to break the delicious news that we piled up 6 in the first, including a 2-run single by pitcher Vogelsong!
and went on to win 8-4.

Don't feel invested in any particular team. It all comes down to what you were raised on I think.

(45,415 posts)Yes basketball, Hockey and Football are fast pace, but with Baseball its about the story, the drama that to builds during a game. I have gone to games that have turned out to be 1-0 after 9 innings. You might call that boring, but that game could end up being a no-hitter which is rare in baseball. It might even be about a duel between two pitchers for that day... its all about the drama of the game, the Story and there are many of them.
The players of the past like Rickie Henderson who could steal bases. You knew he was good and you wanted to see it with your own eyes; would he steal it or get caught? The strong players of Baseball history like Harmen Kilibrew who could hit home runs (In the days before Steroids and Barry Bonds.) I am surprised that people in the Bay Area still like Barry Bonds despite his use of steroids. There steroid scandal was bad for baseball...too many players turned up using.. but still, all of this is part of the drama of baseball.
Baseball tells a story.. even when you make your own box score or use the one provided, baseball is charted out. You can tell what happened every inning. That ground rule double... a three base hit... the ball that should have been caught but was dropped allowing runs to score. Its all part of the nuance of the game.

(5,364 posts)Got one at work like that. Generally decent fellow but somewhat narrow/shallow and not particularly well read. When it comes to sports however, he positively gushes forth with all manner of eloquently stated and articulate ramblings about mostly baseball, basketball and soccer. Mostly about off-field politics/strategy and the people involved. You can sense how intense his feelings are on the subject....As if it all actually mattered.
I bust his balls sometimes and told him once: "Y'know if you ever applied the same attention you give sports to some other field you'd be a nobel peace prize winning guru".

(20,600 posts)Used to follow it closely, but lost interest in it for many years. As a Dodger fan, they haven't been to the world series since 1988. But I heard they finally got a good team last year, and was disappointed they just fell short again. I'm interested if they can get to the world series again.

(10,164 posts)I do enjoy seeing a baseball game at the park (not so much on TV), but I'm really all about soccer when it comes to team sports. The Timbers and Thorns play their home games just a few blocks from my house here in Portland.
