An animal-welfare organization is trying to capitalize on the notoriety of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmers childhood home by suggesting it might turn the house into a vegan restaurant.
Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, sent a letter dated Friday to the realty agent who has listed the Bath Township house for sale. In the letter, she asked about the listing and proposed making the house a vegan restaurant to respond to the past with something positive.
Newkirk likened the way animals are slaughtered, processed and consumed to the way Dahmer treated his victims.
We are always looking for ways to draw attention to the violence inherent in the production of meat, eggs, and milk which involve processes that would shock all but the most hard-hearted person, Newkirk wrote in the letter to Richard Lubinski of Stouffer Realty. Dahmers old house gives us a way to evoke sympathy for these victims and to suggest that a life-affirming diet can change everything.

Fuck PETA.
If you love animals, donate to the humane society or the SPCA.

(2,331 posts)And am now a vegan, but PETA does NOT represent me or I suspect the majority of vegetarian/vegans I know. This latest stunt is literally turning my stomach sick. Do not take these people as representative of my community. It is only somewhat of an exaggeration to call them the Westboro Baptist church of the pro-animal movement. They may not be as viciously hate filled but are filled with bizarre ideas.

(12,504 posts)their attempt to build awareness, is instead building disgust for their movement...someone needs to rethink their messaging strategy.
This type of idiocy, really doesn't help their cause. A majority of the nation are moderates and extremism, is completely offputting, and the message is lost to the initial negativity they are generating.

(110,159 posts)choices you do. more power to you. health.... compassion are favorites of mine. and i respect the person that puts their energies in that direction. care for and protect animals... and thank you, cause my efforts are elsewhere and animals need their champions. make you dietary choices the best you feel works for you. another cheer.
that does not mean i will support and respect peta. not gonna happen. i truly see them as piece of shit people. i expect more.

(50,561 posts)The house is in an area zoned residential and they probably couldn't get rezoning for a publicity stunt, it's on well water and a septic system so no health inspector in his or her right mind would approve it for foodservice, and "creamy chicken casserole," vegan or not, just doesn't sound like something you'd go to a restaurant to eat.

(90,737 posts)...(Apologies in advance, but they've gotten on my last nerve) the God hates fags cult.
PETA could do so much good in this world by tweaking their tactics juuuuust a bit, but instead they focus on outrage generating clown stunts.

(58 posts)Supporting the welfare of animals is such an important endeavor, that has so little attention as is, that this type of antic deflects from the effort. I wish they would try to refine their marketing strategy, to appeal to a much broader audience than just the most devout. Pity

(22,165 posts)... no one talks about PETA's purported cause ... they talk about PETA. They are geniuses at garnering attention for themselves ... not so genius at bringing attention to the animals

(58 posts)I've been reading the site for years, and didn't think I had anything important enough to advance the dialog. However this election cycle is too important to sit and just quietly wringing my hands, but add my voice and my pent up energy. We'll see how I do.. Yikes

(64,409 posts)The fact that ONCE AGAIN an organization that is so allegedly hated by so many (including alleged liberals) has once again met their proposed agenda, win for them. And a win for them, might very well be a win for animals. Double win, anyone...maybe?
Your concern is duly noted though.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)And it turned more people against their cause than to it.
If their message is 'be like us and support our cause' there are probably ways to go about that which does not turn people off to the causes they are championing.
it associates craziness with the causes which isn't helping others who have the same causes 'oh...your like them crazy peta folks' and away goes discussion of the issue and it becomes about the organization.
Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Pat Robertson, Peta....and so on. When your proposed agenda is to get people to not want to associate with you and your causes they all do a good job. Peta is the nra of animals.
Hip_Flask
(233 posts)If it is to gain attention then I suppose it is indeed a win.
I thought their agenda was to change hearts and minds to support their cause? If that's the case then not so much.
