So this is the BEST...

or at least the BEST for today...

A couple who have been very long-term patients comes into my waiting room and sit down. They had been on insurance until recently, when the expiration date passed for retirees from this particular union. The lady of the house shows me an insurance card and asks if we take it. My reply was yes we do, as it is a rider on a medical policy and with a company for whose "customers" we take assignment as our "patients". So she sits down and begins to tell me how horrible this new Obamacare is because it was so very very difficult to sort through the options. Blah Blah Blah - you've heard it all before.

I allowed her to finish and then simply asked, "Would you have had this option earlier, before the ACA was passed and implemented, with this company?" She replied that she would not have. I just nodded.

I think she got the point before she left.

The cognitive dissonance is mind-boggling but there's lots of them.
My cousin is a retired teacher. Retired at 55. Fervent Repug, "Obama's destroying the country," etc. She lives in a very red part of Pennsyltucky. So how did she get to retire young with a great pension, and teach all those years with good pay and benefits, without the help of her union? The very union that the Repugs are itching to destroy? Thankfully I only see her at funerals these days.
Then there was the loudly Repug teacher in my building (I'm payroll/benefits admin) came to see me about putting his 24 year old son on his insurance because of "that Obama crap." I have a firm policy of not discussing politics at work but I bet he saw the steam coming out of my ears.

He was trying to say "that affordable care act" but it sounded like "that Obama crap". My wife's in-laws have a similar problem. Have problems wrapping their tongues around the name but have no problems taking advantage of its provisions.
