At a public forum on fracking, one of the questions was about the relationship between fracking and earthquakes. In response, a research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey likened the fracking process to sticking a shish kebob through the ground. “The stability of the ground really isn’t influenced by the drilling,” she said.


I'm guessing that she won't be appearing at any similar forums in Ohio or Oklahoma or Texas.

1. I didn't think it was the drilling itself but the fluids pumped into the cracks and fissures

That adds pressure in tight spaces and acts as a lubricant. I haven't read much about it lately but last time I did, that's what I understood. Sticking a drill into the ground doesn't cause it, it's the fluids pumped down into the rock.

This was her way of dodging the issue in order to keep her job.
