(50,414 posts)Supplying and supporting the Ukrainian armed forces and/or militias with military equipment or military intelligence? Probably.

(10,362 posts)Because Ukraine isn't important enough to start WW3.
It's so important to Russia to keep Ukraine in their sphere of influence that they won't back down no matter what. Putin is willing to risk everything. His people have been whipped up into fanatical support for resurrecting the Soviet Union.
In this game, the boldest man wins. And that's Putin.
It would be no different if Mexico petitioned China to become part of a greater political union. We'd risk WW3 to stop it, just like we did when the USSR put missiles in Cuba.

(21,475 posts)There is no vital interest for America in Ukraine. We will impose heavy sanctions upon Russia if they invade and take over Ukraine but we will not engage Russia militarily.
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)Anyone who thinks the US wouldn't get militarily involved if the Ukraine was invaded is just dreaming.
Bandit
(21,475 posts)There is absolutely no way the USA would ever get involved militarily in Ukraine unless we were physically attacked by Russia and that is extremely unlikely.
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)First you say we have no interests there, when our leaders think otherwise, now you think if Europe were attacked by Russia we wouldn't get involved. Yeah, right. Keep dreaming.
Bandit
(21,475 posts)are in NATO. We did not get involved when Crimea was attacked and taken over by Russia and it is a part of Eastern Europe, so why on earth do you think we would get involved if Ukraine were taken over by Russia. Yes we have some political interest there but nowhere near enough to warrant military intervention.. I guess you will just have to watch and learn because Russia is not going to stop.
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)and it helped that Russians in Crimea wanted them there. A full-blown attack on the Ukraine would bring the US in for sure.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)the only way the US will get involved with force of arms is if Article V is invoked and that will only happen if a NATO ally is attacked. Ukraine is not one of them. (And this would very much risk a nuclear exchange by the way)
That said, I expect Russia to take all of Ukraine and claim it as it's own. IF they continue on to Warsaw, then we will have to get involved, since Poland IS a NATO member.

(154,021 posts)and becuase we are stretched to the point of being ridiculous. We used to have 100,000 combat troops in Europe, we are down to I think 30K, because we are pivoting to the Pacific (TTP)
Short of a national draft, we really do not have the manpower.
That said, we are forward deploying forces EAST, to NATO countries such as Poland and Rumania, we have been doing this shit for a while
This is the latest on that.

For some reason we are not having our media cover this that much. I guess everybody is afraid that this might end up in a shooting war, and I think at that point all bets are off.

(863 posts)"Short of a national draft, we really do not have the manpower. "
Hey, another reason to have some conscription system I guess.
But regardless, I think even in our current situation we'd show some muscle to show Russia they can't just go into Europe like that.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)there are ways to skin that nuclear kitty, just takes longer.
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)I do know we gave them useless and ineffective sanctions, so I don't think you mean this?
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)they are just enacting them in faces. The stock exchange is not doing well, for example.
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)It seems the sanctions won't do anything...
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)The alternative is a nuclear exchange. I am being quite serious here.
If the Russians go down the Fulda Gap, NATO will nuke them. In fact, I think they advance down Kharkov, they will nuke them to slow it down. And what happens next? I am sure right at the moment all those plans were dusted, re-read and reworked with current Order of Battle and alliance members.
I expect a new cold war tough.
AcertainLiz

If Putin presses to Poland. that is a different matter (and Poland is a member of the Alliance)
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)That is the problem you are having and Ukraine IS NOT a member of the alliance. If you put troops there, it will confirm the worst fears from Moscow. A bad analogy, since it is somewhat a round peg into the square hole, would be Cuba and that crisis.
AcertainLiz
(863 posts)Esp. since their new government is anti-Russian. They should join NATO.

(154,021 posts)a violation of the sovereignty of a NATO member (read Poland for example)
At that point we are obligated and we don't, NATO dies.
Just for Ukraine, I don't think so.
