I think NSA apologists were just made fun of.

Glenn Greenwald Mocks Snowden Critics After Putin PR Stunt
The article is essentially a re-tweet:
"Snowden should storm the Kremlin, take their surveillance docs & demand to be sent to the US: just like his brave patriotic critics would do," Greenwald wrote.

(135,425 posts)Either that, or he's a Putin Prisoner, forced to recite lines and participate in public morality plays at the whim of the ruler.
And Glenn is trying, with Twitterish flop-sweat desperation, to put a good face on a bad situation! That kind of "suck-upage" doesn't do much for the independence of one's source. For whatever reasons, Eddie is serving somebody, and it looks like that somebody is Putin.
Glenn Greenwald, the reporter who published many of the first news stories based on National Security Agency surveillance leaks last summer, took to Twitter on Thursday to address a TV appearance that the source of the NSA documents, Edward Snowden, made alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday.
In the appearance, described by many observers as a brazen public relations move by the Russian government, Snowden asked Putin about Russia's surveillance programs. Putin responded that Russia does not have mass surveillance along the lines of what Snowden exposed at the NSA because its intelligence agencies operate within a strict legal framework and do not have the same technical or financial resources as their American counterparts.
On Twitter, Greenwald took a jab at those who would suggest the appearance proves Snowden, who took refuge in Moscow after being charged under the espionage act last June, is a Russian intelligence asset.
"Snowden should storm the Kremlin, take their surveillance docs & demand to be sent to the US: just like his brave patriotic critics would do," Greenwald wrote. ...

It's an Eddie and Vlad "Nothing To See Here, Move Along!" sideshow.
We know what a "truth teller" Pootie is--remember, he's the guy who said there were no Russian troops in the Crimea, until he changed his mind and admitted it.

(32,886 posts)It says more that Greenwald issued this pre-emptive tweet than what the tweet actually says.
This apologia of Russian surveillance of their people is extremely damaging to Snowden and debunks the idea that his motives were to expose a states' surveillance of its people.
Snowden clearly doesn't care about that in the case of Russia.
The question then becomes, if he only seems to care about it happening in the US and is an apologist for it in Russia, what was his true motivation? Was the data even real?
Or, is it as simple as Snowden hates the US or Obama or both and wanted to hurt the US and make Russia look good?

(34,845 posts)Greenwald may not have gotten as many congratulatory phone calls as he expected for his Pulitzer. And now Snowden is inching the spotlight away.

(135,425 posts)Yeah, he got the story about the NSA geek who ran with the goods.
But did he MISS the story that the geek who ran with the goods had a boss in Russia all along?
That's what is probably keeping him up at night. To say nothing of composing angry tweets.
People forget that Snowden went to Hong Kong because he had BEEN THERE BEFORE. On VACATION....back when he had that job in Japan!!
And people also forget that when Snowden went to ground in Hong Kong, he hid out in the RUSSIAN EMBASSY.
I tend to add up one and one and get two. I don't think GG did that, he was so eager to get the "easy" parts of this story.

(36,437 posts)I'm referring to the OP, who had 17 posts when I posted that, as Julie herself mentions in the post I'm replying to!
I've been here since 2001 in various user names, too.

(36,437 posts)"with your many former DU accounts you shouldn't be so haughty. do you want me to name them all in that thread? I have PMs from you listing all of them."
For the record, I started here at markses in June or July of 2001.
I then used the name onemore from probably 2003-2005.
I think I've been a good citizen here since 2005 at the least, but a dedicated DUer since before 9/11. if somebody wants to threaten on that or ban me for previous accounts, that's obviously their prerogative, but I won't be threatened by jackasses in this manner.
Cheers to all non-jackasses.

Both Putin and Obama denied or rationalized mass surveillance when asked similar questions. Do you believe either of them?
