"We ask you, Lord Jesus, to put an end to all war and every conflict, whether great or small, ancient or recent," he said in his "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message.
Francis, marking the second Easter season of his pontificate, celebrated a Mass to an overflowing crowd of at least 150,000 in St. Peter's Square and beyond.
The crowd stretched back along all of Via della Conciliazione, the boulevard between the Vatican and the Tiber River.

(14,157 posts)The Catholic Church scolding others on wastefulness. Too funny.

(147,788 posts)a luxurious building. The RCC can help ameliorate that excess, if it wishes to. It does not wish to, apparently.
His words ring hollow to me. They could begin by ceasing their campaigning against the rights of women and LGBT people. In Minneapolis St. Paul, the archdiocese here spent millions trying to stop marriage equality, and has spent millions fighting reproductive choice for women. That money could easily have been spent in helping to solve the poverty problems in our inner cities.
I have no patience for this Pope. Let him act instead of speaking. That would improve my patience.

(2,693 posts)While hardly a papist, and with the understanding that most of it is PR, it would still take a willful ignoramus to ignore the messages he is sending.

(45,319 posts)including a big stake in the horrible things going on in Uganda, where his Church accounts for 42% of the population, his Bishops have supported and publically celebrated these attacks on humanity and this man who named himself Francis has not said so much as a word to stop the mobs and the slamming of prison doors.
He is soaked in blood, as guilty as Scott Lively.

When the message is 'eat kosher' and the messenger is having a pulled pork sandwich while speaking that message, the impact is somewhat diminished.

(22,165 posts)that's OK ... If I saw these words scrawled in chalk on the asphalt parking surface of a mall, I would still find them meaningful and correct. That is not the case for you ...so be it.

(45,319 posts)"The Bishop of the Jinja Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Rt. Rev. Fr. Charles Wamika, in todays Easter Message delivered at St. Chalres Lwanga Catholic Church, praised the Members of Parliament for the Anti-Homosexuality Act that provides life in prison for gay (LGBTI) people in Uganda. The Bishop called for a blessing for Ugandas Christians who worked so hard to free the land of gays. The Bishope also asked for parents to hand over their gay children to authorities, so they would be rewarded in heaven. I would call that a statement praising and calling for a genocide."

I find it meaningful that none of you who celebrate the Pope have the basic decency to address the pogrom in Uganda, which the Pope refuses to condemn, which his Bishops are cheering for even as DUers promote the Pope.
I get that you think he got the trains to run on time, I just don't think that excuses hate and bigotry and pogrom.

(22,165 posts)it is rude and unflattering to YOU considering my post stated "One may despise the messenger, but the message is valid and timely"
I wonder how you would feel about the Gay folk I have been closest too for most of my life .... they opted to join Roman Catholic Religious orders (one nun and two Franciscan brothers). Please do not share your opinion of them . They are phenomenal people that (even on an anonymous message board) should not in any way be linked to you.
THE POPE'S MESSAGE IS VALID AND TIMELY

(45,319 posts)Do you really think that his years of attacking gay people are not a contributing factor to the support his Church is giving to genocide in Uganda? His Bishops cheer for this genocide and call for parents to turn in their gay children. Francis says nothing. His silence defines him, not his crafted public relations materials.....

(35,015 posts)I was raised Catholic and left the church years ago after going through a horrific annulment process.
I personally detest organized religion, but millions of people in this world think the Pope is as close to their god as it gets.
I'm in a place spiritually where as I said, positive messages should be supported, no matter who is giving them. Baby steps towards a change in how humans treat one another.
