Brent Terry, a professor at Eastern Connecticut State University was caught on audio telling his Introduction to Creative Writing class that Republicans will close colleges if they prevail in 2014 and that they are racist, misogynist, money-grubbing people who want to suppress the liberal vote.
Campus Reform reports:
racist, misogynist, money-grubbing people have so much power over the rest of us. And want things to go backnot to 1955, but to 1855, Terry said to his Introduction to Creative Writing class Monday morning.
There are a lot of people out there that do not want black people to vote, do not want Latinos to vote. Do not want old people to vote, or young people to vote. Because generally, people like you are liberal.
The audio, captured by a current student who wishes to remain anonymous, also claims that if Republicans win the senate in 2014, colleges will start closing up.
Its absolutely possible that the Republicans will take over the Senate as well as the House. And we will live in a very, very, very different kind of country if that happens. I mean, colleges will start closing up if they, if these people have their way.

(14,733 posts)Heaven forbid we should allow either free speech or reality in a college classroom

(31,849 posts)I would no more support this rant (that I agree with) in a creative writing classroom; than I would support a conservative professor criticizing Democrats.
There are limitations on "free speech" ... there is a time and a place for everything, a creative writing classroom is neither.
Unless of course, the rant was the Creative Writing Professor reading a piece he, or someone else wrote, as an example of some good or bad writing.

(53,765 posts)The more under educated people are and without critical thinking skills, the more they fall for repug talking points that are directly opposed to their economic interests.
The professor is on the money. Hope he survives this.

(27,787 posts)The state universities are the target. Those are where poor and middle class kids tend to go. And the last thing the GOP wants is poor and middle class kids getting an education that would help them raise their socioeconomic status.
A college education is for the rich.

(19,833 posts)It wouldn't surprise me to see republican polices leading to the contraction of public colleges and universities to the point where some close and/or merge.

(4,631 posts)I can see how such a statement would relate to a creative writing class, but what is it based on?

(27,787 posts)Cut funding for higher education at the state Universities. Cut funds for student loans.
The goal isn't to close all the Universities. The goal is to make it harder for poor and middle class kids to be able to attend college at all.
The kids of the rich are the only kids who should be going to higher education. Less competition for them later in life.

(39,215 posts)also feel the pinch (which is already happening). It is simple if the economy does not continue to improve the schools will also be part of the failure. There will be some colleges that will survive due to endowments and other support but many will not.
What makes you think they can survive when everything else is having trouble?

(2,053 posts)'Just an hour after he was denounced by the House GOP leader, Brent Terry apologized for critical comments he made about Republicans and conservatives during a creative writing class at Eastern Connecticut State University, where he warned that a GOP takeover of the U.S. Senate could threaten universities such as Eastern.
During my creative writing class yesterday, I allowed my own political opinions to color the discussion. I regret the language I used, and I apologize to any students in the room who were offended," Terry said in a statement distributed by the school. "As a liberal arts university, Eastern is known for encouraging debate and discussion about a host of social and political issues.
"My role in my own classroom is to keep the debate lively yet respectful. I did not meet that standard yesterday, and for that I am truly sorry."

(32,018 posts)Why would he make such a comment? Did some right wing snitch student with a hidden camera bait him into talking politics, for 15 minutes if fame on Campus Reform type "EVIL LIBERAL PROFESSOR" sites? Unless I'm wrong, my instinct tells me that.

(2,273 posts)And everything to do with that they are just too damn expensive for anyone to afford anymore. We have a whole generation of kids who are graduating with degrees, they can't get jobs and their student loans will take longer to payoff than a home loan. The kids graduating today I can guarantee will tell their kids college is not worth the debt since the jobs you will get will barely cover the cost of your education.
