He said he would continue holding a daily news conference; on Saturday, it drew one reporter and one photographer, so Mr. Bundy used the time to officiate at what was in effect a town meeting with supporters, discussing, in a long, loping discourse, the prevalence of abortion, the abuses of welfare and his views on race.

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

The term "survivalist" was coined in the 70s or early 80s to describe people who expected some kind of complete collapse of civilization so they had property away from cities and fortified it in one way or another: stockpiles of food, fuel, weapons, and ammunition, bomb shelters, etc. the rest of humanity would destroy itself, while they survived and rebuilt.

The usual scenario for the collapse was a nuclear war, but "race war" figured pretty prominently in their literature. Springing from the same paranoid roots as Charlie Manson's "Helter Skelter". Even the nuclear scenarios stressed how "city dwellers" would form bands roaming the countryside for food and they needed the firepower to repel these raiders.

The movie "Tremors" has a survivalist couple. They're a bit of a lampoon, but not as much as one might hope.

In many American cities there are almost no jobs picking cotton at all. Strange but true.

So the problem is more the non-existence of good-paying jobs picking cotton, rather than a shortage of people having attended picking cotton college to learn technical nuances of that task.

Also, the reason slaves wouldn't have been allowed to "abort their young children" is that their offspring were property.

...I was doing a post-hospital exam on one of our patients who had been transferred from our local hospital to a higher level facility because of a severe asthma attack. His mom told me they had 2 choices of where to transfer - Chicago Children's or a suburban hospital, Lutheran General.
