(71,957 posts)Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who said he supported Bundy in an interview with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren earlier this week, denounced Bundy's racist remarks Thursday, Business Insider reports.
"His remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him," Paul said, according to a spokesman.

(9,350 posts)Bundy's statement is mainly the same thing Republicans say everyday. That is why I am not moved by people like Rand Paul coming out and saying they disagree with Bundy.
How many times have we heard similar statements from elected Republican leaders? A few weeks ago Paul Ryan claimed that the real problem for African-Americans was that a whole generation of black men had grown up not knowing the value of work. The idea that black people were better off as slaves has been a theme running through the Republican Party for years. In addition, a Republican at either the Tea Party Convention or the Republican National Convention claimed that white people had nothing to apologize for with regards to slavery because slavery had provided a roof over the heads of black slaves. Finally, Republicans like Ronald Reagan have been using the idea of lazy black people on the government dole to attempt to win and win elections for decades.

It's all on you, Hannity and we all know how you can be and aren't surprising that you are willing to digging deeper and deeper into hole without ever climbing out. (71,957 posts)HANNITY: Yes. Cliven, your reaction to what you think's coming?
CLIVEN BUNDY: Yes, I don't know. It seemed like Harry is along the side of the civil war. I think he's going to make a lot of noise. I'm calling on the United States Congress to pull Harry in and straighten him out. I don't think, as a Congress, and I don't believe you people want -- would call us terrorists, and I don't believe you should allow Harry to run free and loose anymore. His mouth needs to be kept quiet, and you people need to do it. It's not my job, it's your job to rein him in a little bit.
HANNITY: All right, we'll continue to do that.

(9,350 posts)This is a guy who is using government land to graze his cattle and has refused to pay even a small fee for twenty years. Now he claims African-Americans are under government subsidy.
I think for this guy and a number of other white people who complain about African-American being on welfare, the complaining is just projection. I used to think many white people who complained about African-Americans being on welfare were trying blaming African-Americans for their problems. However, now I think some of these white people point to African-Americans being on welfare because they want to deflect away from their use of government subsidies.

(50,528 posts)Your modern African American who picks cotton doesn't go out in the fields with three or four hundred other African Americans who throw bags over their shoulders and pluck bolls while singing "I Get a Kick Out Of You," he goes to the bank in March, borrows a million dollars, buys two trucks, a forklift and a John Deere 7660 Cotton Picker, hires three other people, and picks every field in a three-county area in a week.
And next year, he picks every field without going to the bank.
Unfortunately he has to go to the bank next year...the gin loved those round modules so much, our friend needs another machine to serve all the farmers who want to hire him.
And you know what our friend the cotton picker is doing while he works? He cranks up the AC in the cab, puts in an Aretha Franklin CD and thinks of how stupid Cliven Bundy is.

(1,957 posts)I was not aware that there was a huge demand for picking cotton by hand today. Why does he assume that is all the African American is good for? Family life???? Read the history books of families torn apart by slavery. Young kids never grow up knowing their parents, siblings get sold and many never see them again. Is this the "freedom" he is referring to? Finally who is this "they" that puts all their in jails? I can't imagine many mothers stepping up to the plate with that decision. If he wants to see how much freedom slaves had he could read many a book which describes their long hours picking cotton, some having little to eat, poor housing, fearing the whip or being sold. I never read where they had a lot of spare time for "doing things".

(6,169 posts)They love to re-write history. Anyone who thinks slavery was a good life is a sick, twisted, evil human being.
And another thing that really boils my blood is the idea that giving help to people makes them lazy. That belief is just a self-serving way to blow off the responsibility we have of helping our fellow human beings. Do all those Republican "Christians" realize this stupid idea goes 180 degrees against everything Jesus taught? I never once read in the Bible that we should withhold help from people in need because it might make them lazy!! It's just so very racist to believe that black people don't have the same pride and ambition to make a good life for themselves that most people do. I'm sure the vast majority of people, black, white or otherwise, would much prefer a way to earn a decent living than having to depend on outside help but when people need a hand up, a decent, civilized society offers it to them.

I've lived in Utah my entire life and I speak from personal observation when I say that Bundy is merely a tool for what the LDS (Mormon) Church teaches about racism, bigotry and ignorance. Conservative Republicanism and Mormon religious dogma run this State (and surrounding areas) with an iron fist.
As a result of this dogma, Bundy attracts extremist right-wing zealots like shit attracts flies.
