for some reason, I'm feeling like I kinda don't like DU to much anymore.....our original topics and discussions were so positive about what the Democrats and Liberals thought about and lived by and were DOING.....now it's like DU has become the site of "naysayers, and could ofs, and what should have beens". I'm thinking about starting a new site like the original DU used to be. Who's with me.....and do you have any money to start such a new place. Just saying......DU has become a place that the Lounge is more comfortable then the political and general topics area are. JMHO.

(50,414 posts)We still have the "not as bad/lesser of two evils" loyalists and the "emperor has no clothes" freethinkers fighting it out.
Freedom for supporters of the government only, for members of one party only, no matter how big its membership may be is, no freedom at all. Freedom is always freedom for the man who thinks differently.

(67,112 posts)walk back out. It goes in cycles IMO. Some days I say to myself I'm gone, and guess what, by the end of the day I'm back because I have a DU addiction! I always find topics/comments/DUers I find interesting. Anyway, I get all my news from DU too!

(31,617 posts)That's 10 years ago...... and when I first came to this site it WAS so positive, so YES WE CAN.... And then He came......Barack Obama.... The Man...... And now..... Things have changed. Those that are with him still.... And those that think he could have done better.

(3,447 posts)...a very, very long time ago now. The pro-Kerry/anti-Kerry during the election was pretty tense too, as were the Obama/Clinton cycle and a million more in-between.
I think any site around this long will have its more idyllic moments, and its darker rough-and-tumble moments, but on the whole DU is pretty darn even-keeled imo.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)We hated bush and had someone we could all agree sucked. On just about everything he did.
Now our guy is in the white house and we find that in some things we don't really like what he does (and in others we do).
If we were totally one sided like the right we would just praise all the actions and put team ahead of ideals/principles.
We employ Obama, he has been there some time now, and he hasn't performed as well as we had hoped (and that is not all his fault anymore than everything while bush was in power was all his fault).
On DU we liberals fight over things that are 'liberal' all the time; I highlighted that because people don't agree over what is liberal. Is banning large sodas a liberal cause? Banning guns, smoking, pit bulls, anything else we don't like? I don't think we all agree on that or to what degree some things should be done. A big tent and lots of folks like to use the term liberal when it comes to their pet causes.

(502 posts)I'm quite addicted to the perpetual pissing match and propaganda war between the two factions. Once a week or so I bemoan the time wasted reading the same tired arguments over and over but I just can't quit the junk that is DU. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but there it is.
However, I don't notice newbies so much as I notice it's the same parties over and over. Perhaps it's just the threads I seek out. Peace.

(3,675 posts)thanks for the warm welcome! of course none of the high post count old timers ever blaspheme against the president ( ) and, by the way, much of that criticism seems to come FROM the more liberal members so I am confused about your comment referring to criticism of liberals, democrats and liberals aren't always one and the same thing , especially lately.

(31,617 posts)It's just SOME of you, well.... I'm not going to say anything to inflame you or others that feel the same way as you do....but....I'm just making an observation. Welcome any and all newbies that make DU the place for all tent dwellers. *bowing before all*.

(10,745 posts)Namely, with climate doomers and literal "white privilege" nuttiness. The latter was not at all a problem until just about a year ago and the doomers(with all their accusations of the IPCC hiding the full severity of AGW and their citations of Guy McPherson and other fringe crazies) didn't start ramping up their brand of nutjobbery until sometime in 2012. Although outright Obama bashing has gone down quite a bit, so some good news there.

(1,423 posts)is the best President we have had in my 50 year lifetime imo. In the early 90s I had a conservative bent. Circumstances came along which opened my eyes to the real world beyond the GOP scaring me with wedge issues that they turned out to be wrong about.
There might be triple secret undercover right wingers on this site but I'm not one of them. I'm voting Democrat across the board and have in the last 3 elections. I've become a liberal activist to the shock of my family and friends.
I got into it a little with ProSense because I believe its dumb to push Russia. But then, I read the DU poll where 93% of DU agrees with ProSense. Maybe I am a little "off," but I am sincere.

(18,219 posts)and didn't have a reputation, so fewer right wingers concerned themselves with it. Now, this it THE place for them to go and play games---but they don't last long.
I also notice that when we had a common enemy in Bush/Cheney, it was easier. But I would not wish for another Republican president just to bring us together again.

(53,475 posts)I would argue that the difference isn't in the number of RW trolls, but in the ethos of Democrats who are less focused on the right and more focused on making our own Party as good as it can be.
