In linguistics and grammar, a pronoun is a word or form that substitutes for a noun or noun phrase. It is a particular case of a pro-form.
Pronouns have traditionally been regarded as one of the parts of speech, but some modern theorists would not limit them to a single class because of the variety of functions they perform, including that of the personal pronouns, relative pronouns, interrogative pronouns, demonstrative pronouns and indefinite pronouns.[1]:134
The use of pronouns often involves anaphora, where the meaning of the pronoun is dependent on another referential element. This applies particularly to the (third-person) personal pronouns. The referent of the pronoun is often the same as that of a preceding (or sometimes following) noun phrase, called the antecedent of the pronoun. For example, in the sentence That poor man looks as if he needs a new coat, the antecedent of the pronoun he is the noun phrase that poor man. (Pronouns used without antecedents are sometimes called unprecursed pronouns.) Another type of antecedent is that found with relative pronouns, as in the woman who looked at you, where the woman is the antecedent of the relative pronoun who.

(5,390 posts)I read Aerows comment different than you and the alerter did. You chastised another member for using profanity she just pointed out that you use profanity every time you post by way of your sig line. (151,180 posts)where someone might want to find information by searching on Google. Tupaloo isn't going to take someone searching for Tupelo to information about their city. It's just not.
I have no objection whatever to people posting about weather warnings on DU. I don't think it's very useful to folks living in threatened areas, since they almost certainly know bad weather is imminent already. They can look out their window, and local media is pretty good about covering such things.
But...if they do decide to search for warnings about their area, they're going to search for the proper spelling of their community. Someone living in Tupelo knows how to spell the name of their city. So, they'll search for Tupelo, not Tupaloo. So, if someone wants to warn people there, on the off chance they'll be looking on DU, spelling the city name correctly in the title of the post is important.
That's why I posted the correct spelling in that thread more than once. I don't care if someone wants to post severe weather warnings on DU, but I do care that, if they do, they spell the name of the place correctly. The correct spelling was in the NWS text in the post. It was, however, misspelled in a serious way in the thread title. Paying attention to such details is important if your goal is to alert people to a serious situation in a place.
Spelling matters, Willy. It especially matters in an emergency. Google won't show you Tupaloo if you search for Tupelo. It just wont. So, spelling matters, even on DU, in thread titles.
That's why I posted corrections.

I happened on the post while browsing through the GD post list. I'm familiar with Tupelo, though. It's famous for its honey, which is quite delicious, by the way.
Had I been searching for news about the weather in Tupelo, though, which I wasn't, I wouldn't have found that thread on Google. I would have found a thread on Tupaloo, in the extremely unlikely event I was searching for Tupaloo. My point is that nobody searches for Tupaloo, but they might, perhaps, search for Tupelo to find weather information. They would, however, be likely to go to Weather Underground or the Weather Channel site to find out what was going on.

(151,180 posts)If you lived in Tupelo, you'd surely know how to spell the name of your city. I can guarantee that if you type "Tupelo" into Google, you won't find results with "Tupaloo" in them. It works one way, but not the other. If you typed "Tupelo Weather," you'd get valid weather-related results. Those results would not include "Tupaloo," though.
Now, if I wanted to write something on DU about Tupelo, I'd want people to be able to find what I wrote. So, I'd spell it correctly. If I didn't, nobody searching for "Tupelo" would find my post if I misspelled the name of the city.
And that's why I posted corrections to the spelling error in that thread, and that's the only reason I posted in that thread.

(22,057 posts)means nothing but battery operated weather alerts. I've fought getting a cell phone for years and I'm sure as hell I gave in a few weeks ago. It was my lifeline.
Thanks to all those thinking of us in the state tonight. Its not over yet and a lot of folks didn't get off as lightly as we did.

(93,558 posts)there should be something else that is more reliable . i'm not saying someone can't post about it but that it's not something people should depend on for this type of info.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)missed that.
No DU isn't the "best" place to post tornado info, and there may even be no "best" place. But, it's a place, and it doesn't take anything away from anywhere else to post info. Might even be helpful to some, and certainly gives good hugs to those in danger.
Thanks to Nadine and everyone else who posted for caring and trying to do something. At a time like this we do what we can, and bitching about it has no place at all.

(154,021 posts)who will go after me for anything and everything. So you learn to live with the bullies. What do you do?
If posting all this crap from the twitter (amazing resource) helps one person, mission accomplished. And I know it has helped more than one person. And these people will even attack regular posters who are worried sick about their families, and get away with it.
My dad used to call that having proteksia, protection, and they do. They break all kinds of rules and they get away with it. They are there waiting to pounce, and all they do is insert negativity in this place and try to drive people away. Sad little group if you ask me.
But they are part of the white noise that is these days filtered on DU. They are also willfully ignorant and do not realize just how much the world continues to change. What I was doing today is gathering all kinds of info that is available, but it is nice to have one place to look for it. The fact that this bothers them shows them to be very shallow people in my view.
So the best we all can do is put them on ignore, all of them, and not pay attention to them. They will hate the echo chamber. But you cannot fight them since they are part of the system
And I know this effort helped people to know what was going on with their own families, and I also know local news can take a while to catch up, even in breaking news situations.
The part that galls me about them is that people have died during these storms, but it is all chuckles to them.
Hi my friend, We at times disagree, but we see eye to eye on one fundamental fact that these guys and gals do not, we care about people. I concluded a while ago that they hate me, they are blinded by hate, and they will continue to do this until I leave. It must be really frustrating, 14 years, and nope.
But them making fun of people who are hurting right now is beyond low.

(6,234 posts)Probably should speak out about it more often, but it seems like feeding trolls to get into it with ibullies.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)So the more I think about it the best tactic, since they are not going away, is mass ignore. Do not engage them, do not aknowledge their existence, period.
The more that do that, the less negative effect they will have, because the rest of us will have moved on. It is a small group, but i really do not associate with utterly negative people. None of us should.
And you know the depth of depravity when they call NWS tweets on extreme weather...spam. And when they lure and attack posters who have family directly affected by the storm. Those are not the actions of a normal human being. Those are the actions of a person with real issues dealing with other humans. It has zero to do with politics, but definitely that is a person I would fear for real in a dark alley.
So we are probably dealing with more than your regular run if the mill bully as well.

(3,922 posts)and DU wasn't even on my mind. Getting the hell into the basement and listening to the weather radio and watching the local weather station was my top priority.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)but... i knew that was coming, at times having a collection of tweets from official sources, and media, can help you see a storm before it gets to you.
And by the way, idiots who don't know better, like the local CAL FIRE PIO, have recognized that this is another layer of information. It is not for older people who have a radio, You'd be surprised how many younger people don't (and they should)
Vashta Nerada
(3,922 posts)I was just stating my own experience in severe weather.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)and the reality of it.
The leading edge of social media being seen as another layer actually started here in San Diego in 2007, and it has gown. It is to the point that official sources now have twitter feeds. The paper subscribes to all relevant ones for San Diego in case of a disaster. And I have been separating the wheat from the chaff all day. (I even posted one rumor mongering one that was really bad)
I will be brutally very honest, very worst case scenario, and I have told this to people running FB pages locally expecting to replace media and officials (a disaster waiting to happen, with lawsuit for other reasons), the web will be down, electricity will be down, and the only people seeing this will be outside the zone. Which benefits press people in DC and NYC, that don't have time to move in.
They did not like that, but that is the truth.
But for the moment, me back to separating the wheat from the chaff (and it is also practice for when we have a real local disaster where we will be using twitter and fb and the rest of it as intel gathering)
For the record, I agree with you, people SHOULD have a radio. We have several, battery operated and also solar. And two of them have NWS weather bands. And I do not live in tornado alley. But as I have been accused I am an old fogey. I like to think having done disaster relief makes me especially sensitive to being prepared.
Vashta Nerada
(3,922 posts)such as an earthquake zone, flood plain, tornado alley, or hurricane area (basically most people) should have disaster preparation kits handy so when disaster does strike, or when it's on the way, one can be prepared.
I agree with the role social media has in disaster readiness. When shootings occur at schools and universities, it's usually reported on social media websites like twitter and facebook way before it's on news websites. Many people will get that info right away instead of waiting for news websites to report it. And you're right. Many news sites now have twitter feeds so the news can get out quicker.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)which is at times a pain in the rear.
Our concentration are fires, floods, weather, and quakes. It has to do with 2007 and lack of specific news to the back country. If it happens on 5th and broadway, no problem...the town of Boulevard...not so much. I have been known to tweet from the field, operative word, if I have a connection. At times in the back country that is like pulling teeth. (Though TELCEL has better coverage it seems)
Posters here benefited from the threads by learning if their family was affected though, today.
In fact, I have to do a gear check. I smell a red flag coming up... and I like to check my fire gear before I have to take it to the middle of a fire for some odd reason.
The amount of crap we carry to fires is amazing. And for those who have a kit, I always recommend one piece of kit most people never think about, a multitool, good quality.
And I'd better pay attention to the scanner at the moment, something locally is up... could be a false alarm (likely)

(3,922 posts)I hate fire-prone areas. My archaeology site is in a dry area and it caught fire last August. Thousands of acres burned in northwestern Nebraska. Thankfully no one was there at the time and thankfully the site is covered up so nothing got ruined.
Take care, and good luck.

We weren't personally attacked for participating on that thread. I hate to see that there is so much viciousness these days towards certain posters.

(3,069 posts)I think a large portion of my total posts were in those Katrina threads back then. (154,021 posts)iirc the small group of negative folks went almost into hiding throughout that mess.
But I do not remember them pissing and moaning on posts. I wish we had the official FEMA twitter feeds back then. It would have made things that much easier to keep people abreast.
And that is... a lessons learned of both Katrina and the 2007 SoCal Wilffires.

(109 posts)During Hurricane season, quite often, the newscasts aren't closed captioned. When they are it can be very spotty. I don't know ASL. Needless to say I CAN'T listen to the radio. I remember during Charlie, the information I found on the internet really helped to calm me down and focus on what needed to be done.

(9,463 posts)her contribution no matter what she posts about.
I, for one, appreciate nadin's efforts even when I feel the information she supplies doesn't apply to me. DU is as close to real-time as Twitter (where you get chaos and teens/tweens and justin beiber, 140 characters at a time) when it comes to delivering information in a timely manner to an audience that spans the country and includes people who may have family and friends in the affected area. Regular DUer's know this and will ALWAYS have DU open on the desktops, tablets, and cell phones during an emergency or notable event - ALONG WITH watching/listening to their local TV and radio stations. That is good enough reason for nadin to spend her time keeping others informed.

(29,080 posts)DU helped some of folks connect. Missing kids even. I don't see why anyone would find fault with threads warning us about impending weather conditions, etc. Once, DUers sat by someone in Mexico as she rode out a storm that forced her eventually to seek refuge with a neighbor who had a second story. I can't believe anyone has to defend posting such threads. If nothing else, the emotional support is worth something.
I was personally thanked for the work we did trying to help people get word to their friends and relatives.
And if the big one comes roaring down near my house, I hope y'all will ask if I am ok too!
