However, I have had pain later. My upper arm was quite sore for a couple of days.

The discomfort is worth it. Ask the doctor what to expect, and if you have a really bad reaction, go back for medical attention. Tetanus shots are common, and side effects are rare.

That's why I refer to all possible adverse reactions to any meds as 'potential' side-effects; it doesn't mean you will get them, just that you might. And different patients experience different side effects.

My understanding is that it is still a once a decade shot.

Just about everyone has had at least one DPT shot as a child. The T is the tetanus. Tetanus, should you have the horrible misfortune to get it, is called lockjaw, and it's my understanding that the main source would be a cut from a rusty nail or the equivalent.

A dog bite you need to be more worried about rabies. But even if you have to get rabies shots, they are not the horror they originally were. Not particularly painful (we all have different pain thresholds) and not in the stomach and not once a day for thirty days.

I had a DPT about five years ago. The nurse giving it warned me of possible arm soreness which never happened in my case.

Last time I had a tetanus shot, I had an extremely sore arm for several days. It was tough because I had a baby (I think she was 8 or 9 month sold) that I was carrying around so I couldn't do that... and she kept hitting me in my arm too, always right in THAT spot, LOL. But not a really big deal in the grand scheme of things.
