(151,265 posts)A minor annoyance at worst.

(29,730 posts)The area of the injection might be pretty sore for a few days.
At least, that's been my experience with the boosters I've received.
TDale313
(7,822 posts)I never found them to be that bad. A bit of soreness at injection site for a couple days. Ymmv, but I'd probably get it if the doctor recommends.

(32,988 posts)However, I have had pain later. My upper arm was quite sore for a couple of days.
The discomfort is worth it. Ask the doctor what to expect, and if you have a really bad reaction, go back for medical attention. Tetanus shots are common, and side effects are rare.
You're probably thinking of the typhoid immunization. That's the one that can cause localized myalgia for a few days. Never had a problem with the tetanus immunization.

(32,988 posts)after a tetanus shot. I must be weird.
Aristus
(72,180 posts)who mentioned it. I've never experienced it myself after tetanus immunization.
That's why I refer to all possible adverse reactions to any meds as 'potential' side-effects; it doesn't mean you will get them, just that you might. And different patients experience different side effects.

(19,877 posts)Not the shot but the after effects. Arm was extremely sore and useless for almost 3 days. But it sure beats getting tetanus.
dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)and these days I think its a more or less forever shot unlike the old days.
I got myself jabbed with that and Hep A first time I went to Cuba just in case.
If you want what pain is then have a steroid jab straight into your hip...........fuck, fuck , fuck .......scream.
Coventina
(29,730 posts)It felt weird, feeling the needle probing so deep into my innnards, but it didn't hurt.
I'm sorry yours was such a pain!
dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)I should've known when I saw the size of the needle.
I said afterwards "you might have warned me" and he replied "didn't like to"
Coventina
(29,730 posts)but from here, that sounds kind of insulting!
But, if he was joking and you have a rapport, maybe not.
dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)Not my GP.
I had another one at a later date with the same guy so knew what to expect. After that he warned off them - apparently there is a high risk of infection with those jabs.

(26,467 posts)those sucked, i'll never get one again...

(20,885 posts)And I HATE getting shots!

(23,156 posts)My understanding is that it is still a once a decade shot.
Just about everyone has had at least one DPT shot as a child. The T is the tetanus. Tetanus, should you have the horrible misfortune to get it, is called lockjaw, and it's my understanding that the main source would be a cut from a rusty nail or the equivalent.
A dog bite you need to be more worried about rabies. But even if you have to get rabies shots, they are not the horror they originally were. Not particularly painful (we all have different pain thresholds) and not in the stomach and not once a day for thirty days.
I had a DPT about five years ago. The nurse giving it warned me of possible arm soreness which never happened in my case.

(8,646 posts)Last time I had a tetanus shot, I had an extremely sore arm for several days. It was tough because I had a baby (I think she was 8 or 9 month sold) that I was carrying around so I couldn't do that... and she kept hitting me in my arm too, always right in THAT spot, LOL. But not a really big deal in the grand scheme of things.

(110,260 posts)I found it no worse than the flu shot I get every year. Really not bad.
If it's closer, you can also get one from a lot of drug stores.

(40,270 posts)I had a booster not long ago and didn't even feel it.

(9,766 posts)(I kid).
The shot itself was nothing. Had some muscle pain for a few days at the injection site, but nothing horrible.

(11,862 posts)it took 2 strong men to hold me down to get a tetanus shot after I had fallen in the school yard and busted my face...so there you have it.
KT2000
(22,150 posts)at worst your arm may be a bit sore - but you will be protected from the problems that could arise from stepping on nails and other rusty things. Not a big deal at all IMHO.

(14,881 posts)Very good to get, especially with any sort of puncture wound.
You do NOT want to get tetanus.

(154,021 posts)and we get our boosters every ten years. I am surprised you have never gotten one. They are part of the schedule in Mexico for childhood shots.
So from experience, the most they will do is be uncomfortable at the injection site for a couple of days.

(28,280 posts)No, it really isn't that bad. And I'm phobic of needles. Go ahead and get it.

(12,251 posts)I was glad I got the shot because I knew tetanus probably would have killed me.
I almost lopped my finger off pruning a bush one year! It hurt a lot less than the cut!

(24,310 posts)What can I tell you? It's a shot, your skin will be punctured by a sharp object; but I have never found it to be particularly bad.

(36,286 posts)Back in 1978, has a DPT and my arm was too sore to sleep on the next night. I had one last year with no problems, so
You can always take some acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
You need an up to date pertussis shot if you are going to be around any infants.

(11,076 posts)You may get body aches and feel out of it for a day. I had that one last week . The arm was sore a bit and I felt like crap for a day but I am fine now and glad to have the protection!
I hope you are feeling 100% soon! Did you bite the dog back? Peace, Kim

(15,359 posts)get it in my left arm to leave my throwing arm uncompromised. Doh! Then I could hardly swing a bat! It's still not that bad unless you have to do something like that. It just makes you a little sore.

(14,691 posts)I had one and it didn't hurt any more than any other shot, which is to say it hurt hardly at all. Maybe I got a very small temporary bump.

(13,850 posts)a big deal. Same as any other shot.

(80,708 posts)A bit of residual soreness but hardly a 1 on the pain scale.

(20,600 posts)self-deleting, and I may give future updates, it just depends. The wound was cleaned by a doctor, and I am taking antibiotics with a "wound evaluation" follow up appointment in a couple of days. Thanks for the feedback!
