On Tuesday, the House Republican leadership formally announced its chosen Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) to lead the latest in a series of Benghazi committee investigations. On Wednesday, Gowdy made a telling slip.
Asked by MSNBCs Joe Scarborough about the possibility that his panels work would continue into the 2016 election campaign, Gowdy replied that if an administration is slow-walking document production, I cant end a trial simply because the defense wont cooperate.
A trial? And the Obama administration is the defense? So much for that serious investigation House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) promised; his new chairman intends to play prosecutor, proving the administrations guilt to the jury in this case, the public.
It was no small admission. Publicly, GOP leaders insist their election-year charade is actually a credible search for the facts, wherever they may lead. Theyre going into this process, not on a partisan witch hunt, but as responsible public officials. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) assured reporters this week that this is going to be a serious investigation.
Except Gowdy accidentally told the truth on national television hes already convinced, before the process even starts, that the White House is guilty of wrongdoing, and the far-right congressman believes its his job to prosecute administration officials.
In other words, Gowdy effectively admitted that everything his own party is saying about the select committee is wrong.
Making matters considerably worse, the South Carolina Republican has not only prejudged the matter he hasnt started investigating yet, he also seems badly confused about the basics of the Benghazi story itself.

Gowdy appeared on The Lead With Jake Tapper May 7th to state that he was definitely not using his new position to raise money. I cannot and will not raise money on Benghazi, he told Tapper. He called on fellow Republicans to hold to that same promise.
Gowdys friends in the National Republican Congressional Committee arent quite so circumspect, however. They can and are raising money on Benghazi with no apparent qualms about doing so. Theyve created a blog for precisely that purpose.
-snip-
Pretty ghoulish, if you ask me. And, to his credit, Gowdy agrees, saying that he would advise my colleagues to follow his lead. But wait hang on a minute. It seems that Rep. Gowdy didnt always feel this way. Think Progress has discovered a couple of skeletons in his fund-raising closet. And they are dressed in hypocrites robes.
Gowdy attended a fund-raising barbecue for Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) last September. There, according to the local newspaper, Gowdy wasnt reticent about addressing Benghazi:
Referring to the scandal surrounding the murders of four American citizens in the Benghazi attacks, Gowdy said this is not the case. It is a scandal, he said. But it is not a phony scandal. Gowdy said these scandals begin to chip away at the publics trust in their government. There is nothing phony about (citizens) not trusting the people they put in positions of leadership, he said.

Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi thats pretty much all Republicans want to talk about. But why wouldnt they? With the most recent jobs report being strong, unemployment falling to 6.3% and Obamacare enrollment surpassing 8 million sign ups, they need something to distract from all the positive news. Well that, and they have a desperate need to continue to keep Benghazi in the headlines because theyre terrified of Hillary Clinton in 2016.
So yes, get ready to hear about Benghazi for the next 2+ years. That much I can promise you. And these current hearings will be nothing more than a right-wing circus. Sure, theyre allowing 5 democrats to be on the committee, but thats just so that they can say the hearing was bi-partisan and impartial. After all, how would the hearing look if Republicans excluded Democrats altogether? Lets be honest, thats what they would really like to do.
But as tempting as it is for Democrats to be a part of this committee, they shouldnt have to do it. By participating, all theyre doing is adding legitimacy to this Republican sideshow. Granted, if they boycott it Republicans will say that they offered Democrats a chance to be involved and they chose to hide from the truth and play partisan politics to avoid getting to what really happened. Who cares what Republicans say? Weve had thousands of pages of reports from actual intelligence committees that have told us what happened that night. Theres no mystery. And this new committee isnt about finding out what happened, because we already know! Its absolutely ridiculous.
Democrats should take no part in this circus that will do nothing more than feed Fox News with a few headlines to ramble on about in the coming weeks. That and waste taxpayer money on something weve already spent millions of dollars investigating.
