CAN-struction contest - food to be given to the poor

CAN-struction at its finest: Space shuttle, windmill and Eiffel Tower painstakingly created in competition using tinned food that will be given to the poor

Sculptures in Vancouver made out of everything from tuna to tomatoes
More than a million full cans have been donated to food banks since 2002
Focus of this year's Canstruction contest was Around the World

Some of the world's best-known buildings and vehicles have been painstakingly recreated, using nothing but canned food.

Volunteers in Vancouver, Canada, used 65,000 full tins of everything from tuna to tomatoes to create sculptures ranging from Florida's Space Shuttle to Dutch windmills.

But they will not stand for long - as the Canstruction event donates all the tins to the poor.

More than a million have been handed to the city's food banks since the contest began in 2002.

We didn't contribute last year due to budget restrictions but the year before we contributed something like 3500 cans and built one of the few solid structures in our region.

It's mainly open to design and architecture firms - you can't just exactly say you're going to enter and make a design. You have like a $500 start up fee, and then you have to get stores or distributors to donate cans, you have to come up with a design and have it approved by the Canstruction board, I could go on and on.
