Bachmann: ‘Not true’ that people go without insurance because of the cost

By David Edwards

Rep. Michele Bachmann insisted this week that the reason 40 million Americans “choose” not to buy health care insurance has nothing to do with the cost.

Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity after attending Supreme Court arguments on Wednesday, the former Republican presidential candidate said that the Obama administration was wrong to suggest that insurance could be regulated because everyone would eventually be in the health care market.

“It’s still an opportunity that some people choose to engage in, but 40 million people do not.”

She continued: “And the premise was made that people don’t buy insurance because they can’t afford it. That’s not true. There are people who just decide they want to roll the dice and take their chances that they won’t need insurance.”

because our individual health insurance started out costing us $465/month with $2000/year deductible (1986). We are both self-employed so we were not able to deduct any portion of the cost of health insurance from our taxes. The second year, the premiums went up to around $600/mo. but our deductible went up to $5,000/year. The deductible had to be paid before we could go to a doctor covered by insurance. So yes, we rolled the dice and it was a gamble, but we couldn't have survived paying those type of premiums AND covering the deductible before we could claim the first cent spent on healthcare.

Bachmann is an idiot, but we already know that.

. . . I think what she intended to say is that the expense of insurance is not the sole reason people don't get it.

"they just don't want to pay for their own insurance but want others to"
I've heard it from just about every ACA supporter here at some time or another.

Perfectly Republican attitude dripping with scorn for those Cadillac drivin' welfare queens who freeload off the hard working Americans blah blah...driving up my health insurance premiums blah blah blah...
They sound just like Rush Limbaugh when they talk like that. I can practically hear his third and fourth chins wagging indignantly as they inveigh against "freeloaders" INSTEAD OF AGAINST THE INSURANCE CARTEL WHO WILL BE STUFFED WITH TAXPAYER SUPPLIED SUBSIDIES AND A CAPTIVE CLIENTELE BY THIS GRANT OF MONOPOLY.

It never occurs to them apparently that under ACA they would STILL have to pay for such people ANYWAY under the Medicaid expansion and the ballooning subsidies that will needed to keep people in the system who simply can't afford to keep up with escalating demands of the Insurance Mafia.

The ONLY reason I have gone without medical insurance 6 out of the past 10 years is cost. I cannot afford the premiums, let along deductibles and co-pays if I actually decide to USE the policy.
