Columbia Univ students are distributing lists of campus rapists

Here's The 'Rapist List' Flyer Being Anonymously Handed Out At Columbia

Earlier today, we reported that a "rapist list" penned by unknown authors was appearing in women's bathroom stall walls on Columbia University's campus. University custodians were erasing the lists almost as quickly as they appeared. But now, whoever is responsible has doubled the fuck down; instead of scribbling names on walls, they're handing out flyers.

The flyers list the names of four men that the authors say were found responsible for sexual assault yet allowed to remain on campus. For the sake of their privacy, we've blurred out the names, but the list includes a musician, a prominent writer for a campus publication, and a varsity athlete. The three whose enrollment at Columbia we were able to verify appear to be current students, according to their public social media accounts.

The graffiti has also created a logistical challenge for the administration. It is reported and wiped away, but quickly reappears elsewhere. The Columbia Spectator, the student newspaper, and two student blogs, The Columbia Lion and Bwog, have documented the new appearances on an almost hourly basis.

Leila, a sophomore, said that making the list public was counterproductive. “I think it’s really hurting the people that actually want to help the victims and get policy changed across campus,” she said. She asked to be identified by only her first name because she did not want to antagonize the people behind the fliers.

Jon E. Hanford, a university employee at Butler Library, where fliers have been left in bathroom stalls, said he understood the desperation behind the postings. “If due process isn’t getting results, something more needs to be done,” he said. But, he added, “I don’t know if that justifies it, if you’re publicly shaming someone.”

Emma Sulkowicz, a junior who is a participant in the federal complaint, said she was glad that the names were now public.

The university should simply turn over all such allegations to the police. Nye Bevan May 2014 #4
Aside from the difficulty of prosecution in many cases, I agree with you. n/t nomorenomore08 May 2014 #5

while it is easy to understand frustration about not being heard or being taken seriously, a false accusation would be very bad indeed

Let the criminal justice system take its course. Anyone found guilty in a court of law should be expelled.

I've been reading about this Columbia story and I don't understand why the actual police aren't involved. If you aren't a student and you are assaulted you go to the police. If you are a student, why don't you go to the police? Rape is a crime.

Back in the day at my podunk college there was a rape in my dorm and actual law enforcement were called. Colleges should not be involved with investigating crimes. There are too many problematic issues with that to even list.

it lets female students know not to be alone with any of these guys. Back in the Dark Ages when I was in college, the college was under-reporting sexual assaults all the time. It was a well known fact that going to the Campus Police with sexual assault charges (including rape) was a waste of time. Why? Because they wanted to protect their reputation. I can fully understand someone's frustration here and their actions.
