No
There are racists out there and even right here on DU. I will call people racist when I see it.

(114,647 posts)Sure, they were made by stone bigots, but getting them to modify bad behavior is often the best thing we can do.
And I just read a dilly that didn't use a single pejorative but caused many counter posts wielding the famous DU clue by four.

You didn't seem to care about anyone else's feelings then.....you are not exactly in a position to make this demand considering those....

(75,480 posts)of suppression of language that has spread here on DU. It leads to suppression of ideas and opinions, censorship and other abuses. But carry on. It's how a word is used and the context, not the word itself that should be of concern. Never mind. Many here already are calling me a rabid female dog under their collective breaths because they are afraid to say the word, not to me, but their disapproving peers.

(4,491 posts)it's the willingness of some to mock and ridicule people they disagree with. Taunts and insults aren't the makings of vigorous debate.
I'll add this - derailing threads and sniping really undermine discussions. When people jump into a thread and attack others, while ignoring the topic at hand, they're doing everyone a disservice.

The fault dear Manny is not in the words but in ourselves.

the crass method of discussing issues is depraved and without any semblance of intelligence.
there was definitely no semblance of intelligence there....yet the crowd cheered on and on and on. Woo Haaa, rec rec rec~ Sad that.

(19,488 posts)There are cases where, in my own humble opinion, douchebag is appropriate. Not necessarily to describe another DU'er; maybe in reference to individuals outside of Democratic Underground for whom this invective would be applicable.
Spell check suggests douche bag, or douche-bag, but not douchebag.

(47,209 posts)Mostly what happened here, was people offended by slurs used and calling the slurs bigoted.
I know kept your distance, but figured since you wrote an OP about this "problem", someone should explain the actual problem.

(46,179 posts)It would make teaching my students not to call people names a hell of a lot easier if they didn't learn to do so from the other adults in their lives. As a matter of fact, if adults practiced simple civility to one another, and taught it to their children, I wouldn't HAVE to do so for them.

(1,096 posts)Many times I have posted about an issue with some level of ignorance (no arrogance, no malice), and I have been inundated with abusive arrogance, rather than intelligent information. While I am well informed on many issues, there are others I don't have a full understanding of, which is the original reason I began coming to DU. Some how I expect more from a political base which hangs it's hat on empathy and tolerance.

(777 posts)I could not agree more with you !!! How about also not using the eternal F-word , it becomes meaningless and just shows poor skills at expressing yourself . English is such a rich language . Just think of Shakespeare , he could express every human emotion without resorting to bathroom language .
