The Metropolitan Museum of Art Releases 400,000 Images Online for Non-Commercial Use

http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2014/05/metropolitan-museum-of-art-releases-400000-hi-res-images-into-the-public-domain/

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has released a vast archive of 400,000 (mostly) hi-resolution digital images online that you can download and use for non-commercial purposes. From a 12-megapixel scan of Rembrandt’s 1660 self-portrait to over 18,000 photos spanning almost two centuries. Here are a few quick gems from the Photography collection, see also: Arms & Armor, Modern and Contemporary Art, and other highlights. (via Kottke)

I used to work there when I lived in New Jersey. The family still refers to those five years as my contribution to the art world. They also have a whole bunch of their exhibition catalogs on their web site that you can read, download or print for free.

We have the bandwidth now, so why not? There is no reason to keep them hidden from view.

Awesome photos!

Well, then, how about you make a website to connect professional bonded volunteers with museums willing to let outsiders handle their treasures?

No excuse?

Not to knock photography, but I am sure it is a tiny percentage of the Met's collection.

that's why I posted one of the Rembrandt paintings. The detail is incredible.
