Warning! Anything You Say or Do Might be Persecuting FAKE CHRISTIANS

"..Right wing bigots can’t get over Michael Sam. Look, let’s be precise: fake Christians can’t get over Michael Sam..."

The college star was drafted by the St. Louis Rams despite threats by religious extremists to put whatever team drafted Sam out of business. They felt somehow that Sam being allowed to play in the NFL violated their rights. Most sane people would understand that banning Sam merely because of his sexual preferences is what would be a violation of rights – his rights, as it happens, but for these extremists, they are the only people who have any rights. The rest of us have to live our lives tip-toeing around hoping we don’t somehow “persecute” them by doing something they don’t like. To make matters worse, Sam had the temerity to kiss his boyfriend, and to really make matters worse, ESPN and others had the nerve to televise the kiss. You remember Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Lies about Homosexuality complain that he was *gasp* “forced” to watch Sam kiss his boyfriend?

Talk about being persecuted, those poor bigots! Sam might as well have been Nero. The thing is, Nero didn’t really persecute any Christians, because to be honest, there probably weren’t any Christians in Rome to be persecuted, and Sam didn’t persecute any Christians either. For one thing, any real Christian would have spent that time loving their enemies, like Jesus told them to do, and turning the other cheek, also per Jesus’ instructions. I mean, look, I’m just a surly old son of Odin here, and tell me if I’m missing something, but aren’t Christians supposed to do what Jesus told them to do? And not do? Like, don’t pray in public because it makes you a hypocrite? And love your enemies and do unto others as you would have them do unto you?

Brian Tashman over at Right Wing Watch points to a little whine fest between Lars Larson and Breitbart columnist C. Edmund Wright. As usual with these things, they started with a false premise, namely that, a) Sam’s kiss is representative of anti-Christian persecution in America, and b) that all Christians are hostile to gay rights and gay people. You mean, like the Pope, who said, “Who am I to judge a gay person?” That Christian? And isn’t that what Jesus says to do anyway? Not judge? You know, when people wanted to stone a woman and Jesus said, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her”? And, “Judge not, that you be not judged”?

Well, far be it from these bigots and fake Christians to care what Jesus said. To be fair, they probably don’t even know what Jesus said because you have to actually open the Bible to find out, and if there is one thing pretty obvious about the Religious Right, it’s that they have never opened the Bible they pretend to be defending. At least not the New Testament. You know, that part of the Bible by and for Christians. And in fact, Gallup just reported that support for same-sex marriage has reached a new high of 55 percent. This means there are quite a few American Christians who also have no problem with Michael Sam. But Lars Larson and C. Edmund Right are pretty sure that kiss persecuted them and worse, that it’s a lot like making it a crime to insult Mohommed. Or putting an NFL franchise out of business for drafting a gay player, I’m sure they’d agree.

Larson said,

"...You know what I compare it to, if you go to certain countries on this planet [are there other countries on other planets we can visit?] and you say a harsh word about Mohammed, the penalty is death. In America, if you say a harsh word about somebody who is homosexual, the idea is a public death or an economic death [like the Rams?] or a career death. So what’s the different in that kind of thinking?.."

The religious right reads the bible, they just pick and choose the parts they want to believe. It has become clear to me that the religious right is just a cover for corporations (who are now apparently people too). Corporations and the uber rich do not care about Jesus or the bible, but they've found that preaching hate and intolerance in the name of Jesus makes it more palatable for the average American who goes to church every week. It's brilliant really, in it's simplicity and power! Take your agenda....say homosexuality....pick and choose bible verses and use them out of context, or even change them a little to suit your purposes (surely God won't mind....He probably MEANT to say that anyway)...make donations to mega churches and Christian leaders to promote your agenda....confirm that any person not obeying the word of God (your words and agenda) is a sinner and will certainly burn in hell...make headlines...now local pastors jump on the bandwagon using the headlines to make their sermons more relevant....surely God is speaking to the world, but the world has chosen sin; as they point to biblical prophecy about the end times to bolster their sermon with fear. Now the average church goer who looks to the church for guidance in their opinions and their lives receive this message with a fervent delivery and accept it as the word of God. No debate. And voila: church people are suddenly tied into the rabid right's agenda...they are so busy being holier than thou and prideful that God has spoken to THEM, they don't see anything else that is going on in the world. Now they can explain away our dying earth, dissatisfied young people, wars, famines, plagues, pollution, tsunamis, and a plethora of man made disasters with a biblical prophecy...nothing we can do about it...it's been written...(how's your soul brother, do you know where you'll be spending eternity?)! Following this same vein of thought, the churches can evangelize without affecting change in the community...because Jesus said there would be poor always...and they have obviously disappointed God or they would be affluent... Next thing you know we have allowed corporations to become our god; now they can preach politics, womens rights, homosexual sin, the evil of other religions, the blasphemy of the Christian Left.... That's why I no longer go to church or associate with any organized religion...I'm no longer a sheep to be led around and molded in their image! I AM a follower of THE WAY, which Jesus taught and lived while he was here on earth. Peace, love, kindness, communication, humility, generosity, concern with one another and future generations, being good stewards of our planet... And just for the record, Jesus loved everyone and God created us each to be exactly who we are (gay, bi, trans, and everything in between); He's also unconcerned with other social issues like abortion, the war on womens reproductive rights, welfare, food stamps, and Obamacare! He doesn't want this country run on the bible, but on the constitution that He inspired the founding fathers to write as groundwork for our new nation. People do a lot of terrible things In the name of God and believe they're right....but in the end, ya just gotta ask this one question to know what's right: WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?

My estranged brother, the catholic, is one of those guys...and he's broken my mother's heart. I sent him an email about 6 months ago and said, it's been a year since you've been in touch and I was just wondering why. And I finished it off with WWJD?

he never wrote back.

Still so ignorant as to even give credence to such drivel as myths and fairy tales? How about some good old, force fed, truth, for a change? Educate people. Teach them that the world is not flat. Teach them that dinosaurs really did exist. Teach them that our planet is actually over 4.5 billion years old. Teach them that spooks do not live in the sky. Teach them that trolls with pitchforks aren't real. And above all else, teach them that organized religion (any and all) is the most vile, hateful, intolerant, and exclusionary, cult that ever existed. And teach them that paying money to a snake oil salesman will not make a bit of difference as to what will become of them when they die. Education is the key that unlocks the door to happiness in life.

of that relationship. At least, not that I've seen.

I honestly would have expected the folks 'so worried' about that kiss to massively overlap with the folks that quietly lament the loss of anti-miscegenation laws.

i thought all one had to do is believe that jesus is the son of god to be a christian. i guess no christian is capable of doing wrong or bad in the eyes of christians of various beliefs systems so those christians who behave differently than the one making the charge are deemed "fake" christian so as not to taint the christian brand. i could go to one of those fundie megachurchs and they would tell me liberal christians are fake christians. as a gay man i have been the recipient of all that christian "love" my whole life so these "they aren't real christian" comments are amusing to me. those christians i encountered (mostly catholic french canadians in northern maine) growing up must have been the "fake" ones and the "real" ones were in hiding somewhere.

Because you can NOT have it both ways.

You claim ...

(1)
America is a "Christian Nation"
BUT ...
(2)
American "Christians" are victims who are constantly persecuted

You simply can't have it both ways, so choose one.
