31% of Detroit Pregnancies Aborted

Nearly one-third of all pregnancies in the city of Detroit end in abortion, a statistic public health officials blame on rising poverty and dwindling access to affordable contraception.

Of an estimated 18,360 pregnancies among Detroit residents in 2012, the most recent year for which data are available, 5,693 ended in abortion, or 31 percent.

During that same year, an estimated 160,219 pregnancies were reported in Michigan, with 22,699 abortions.

That translates into a Detroit abortion rate — the number of abortions by population, including women who weren’t pregnant that year — of 37.9 per 1,000 women aged 15-44. That’s up from 27.5 per 1,000 women in 2001.

It’s a staggering three times greater than Michigan’s statewide rate, which declined from 12.6 abortions per 1,000 women during child-bearing years, to 11 per 1,000, over the same period.

1. Once again, it is proven that what will get abortion numbers down

is solid economy for the would-be parents. If the anti-choicers were really interested in getting the numbers of abortions down, they would be out there fighting to raise the minimum wage, fighting to get paid maternity leave, fighting to ensure everyone had access to health care without breaking the bank.

But they are not, because their real agenda is to shame women for having sex.

everything is Black and White so Abortion = Bad to them and their for it must be made illegal. It doesn't matter the reason for the abortion or what could really put an end to them, all that matters is that abortion be made illegal.

If they were born some of these same people who claim to care or who claim are against abortion are the same ones who do their damndest to kill them once they are born. The same people who love to go to war to kill babies, children, all people.

What is really being said is that they are BLACK WOMEN! Also why Detroit? What about the rest of this country?

If that is the case then, overall, the rest of the country is going to hell in a handbasket right along with Detroit.

Those statistics are wrong no one knows how many are done. Did they research how many are hidden in the red states or buried in the backwoods or someone's backyard..

If East, South and West Africa had access to abortion it would solve a lot of problems.

No use bringing kids into the world that you have no ability of raising properly let alone feeding.

9. I hate these reports that don't specify how the data breaks down

Abortion does not equal elective abortion.

in the Gravida/para/abortus hospital reporting system; abortus also includes miscarriages, which would be indicated by poor healthcare and nutrition.

The right wing whackos get to misuse the data and will claim it is all late term dilation and curettage abortions.

10. That's really sad. It means that few can afford to have kids

and also that conditions are bad enough that no one wants to bring kids into it.

What has been done to Detroit, once the cradle of the American Dream, is utterly sickening. One wonders if that's a laboratory for trying out what they want to do to all of us.

15. I live in a state where money from oil and gas leases go into a trust fund

and it requires a huge effort to tap the interest, let alone the principal. The problem here is water, not money. We have enough for the near future but that's it unless the drought breaks.

Most states aren't nearly as lucky and most big cities are even worse off, thanks to tax write offs by commercial property owned by churches and corporations that have been lured in by tax breaks and will skedaddle when the time is up.

I keep thinking Detroit is their laboratory for the destruction of the American Dream. After all, it's the birthplace of that dream.

Clearly, some efforts to bring affordable contraception to the city are urgently needed.

Why you got your eyes on what a woman chooses to do with her body. Get the F--k out of here. Get a life. Because as you can tell from your stats Detroiters prefer to not have one be brought under a Dictatorship!!. Find something else to spend your time worring about unless you plan on coming here taking in a few mouths to feed. Its what I thought!!

the rate of abortions per pregnancy compared to the rate per woman of childbearing age. big difference.

also, comparing the rate of abortions where they are widely available to areas where they are not is not the same thing.
