6 shot, 2 dead in yet another mass shooting in the US

[img][/img]

Two men were killed and at least six people injured in shootings across the city Sunday night and early Monday morning, according to police.

About 1 a.m. this morning, police responded to a report of gunfire in the 5400 block of West Haddon Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, police said. Officers found a 25-year-old man on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds to the body, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan said.

The man, later identified as Lance Stanton, was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Stanton, who lived in the block where he was shot, was pronounced dead at 1:36 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

In a separate fatal shooting, a 46-year-old man was killed about 8:05 p.m. in the West Side's East Garfield Park neighborhood.

The man, later identified as Aaron Feazell, was shot multiple times in the 3300 block of West Maypole Avenue, authorities said. Feazell, of the 1400 block of S. 10th Avenue in Maywood, was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:25 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Sadly there won't be any memorials, debates, discussions or nationwide media attention over these shootings because it happened in a poor black neighborhood and as usual the shooter or shooters will always get away because the police never bothers to look.

Some good news going into what will undoubtedly be a violent holiday weekend: A new report from Everytown for Gun Safety found that the number of mental health records submitted to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has tripled since 2011, preventing 65 percent more mentally ill people from purchasing firearms through licensed dealers. The reason? Increased federal funding and stronger record collection laws in 18 states.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/05/07/181998015/rate-of-u-s-gun-violence-has-fallen-since-1993-study-says

Since 1993, the United States has seen a drop in the rate of homicides and other violence involving guns, according to two new studies released Tuesday. Using government data, analysts saw a steep drop for violence in the 1990s, they saw more modest drops in crime rates since 2000.

"Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011," according to a report by the federal , "and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.

And in the same timeframe, the US population grew by roughly 30 million, and the number of guns in circulation roughly DOUBLED, from 150 million to almost 300 million.

from my perspective we are not a sick society. Guns are one of many factors - I am not sure if it is an important one, especially if those guns are killing fewer people every year. An increasing death toll due to increasing violence would be a sign of a sick society - take Venezuela or most South American countries as examples (one third of the world's murders take place in South and Central America). When a society has a two decade stretch of decline in every measurable aspect of criminal violence then if it is sick than it has also found the means to heal itself.

Here in the Jacksonville, FL area, black-on-black shootings and violence are an everyday occurrence. This was just recently:

"In an ongoing outburst of violence, about 30 gunshots erupted along West Sixth Street off Myrtle Avenue about 2 p.m. Tuesday. The gunfire struck a man and a woman who were driving down the street, police said.

In the last seven days, there have been at least 15 people shot in Jacksonville in 11 shootings, according to Times-Union records. At least three people died. A witness’ description of Tuesday’s shooting indicated it was a possible ambush."

http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2014-04-29/story/1-dead-1-wounded-30-shots-fired-another-jacksonville-shooting

If this was in a white neighborhood it would be national news with all out law enforcement attention. Black neighborhood, one little local article and it will happen again within a few days with little more than shrug and brief mention on the evening news.
