MDIF is incubating its first project: Outernet, the worlds first truly global media delivery service.
Founded by MDIFs Director of Innovation Syed Karim, Outernet will use a network of small satellites to transmit selected internet data audio, video, text and applications to any Wi-Fi-enabled device, including mobile phones, anywhere in the world at no cost.

And if limited services means that people can't just camp on it all day running movies or endless music, so be it. I doubt there would be much problem getting to DU, unless DU's a bandwidth hog and we just don't know it.

(20,600 posts)great. The ultimate would be free world wide super fast broadband for all.
If some billionaire like Gates or Buffet or someone with multi-billions interested in philanthropy, instead of giving their money to charity, they could spend billions on an independent outer-net system, with their own satellites, and provide the world with free or low cost super fast broadband.
The perk would be they could name it after themselves, or name it whatever they wanted.

(3,003 posts)Coming off of using Satellite internet myself, I speak from experience.
But then again, it's better then no internet at all. So for those who don't have internet, it's great.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is a direct response by Congress to address the economic crisis that started in the fall of 2008. The Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service (RUS) has provided grant funding to develop infrastructure that includes roads, energy, communications and broadband. Internet service providers like WildBlue have been granted funding to connect rural Americans with affordable broadband service.

Thank You, President Obama & The Democrats!
Unfortunately, this program has expired,
but those of us who signed up can keep our discount rates for as long as we pay the monthly bill.
It certainly isn't as fast as the cable access we had in Minneapolis,
but much faster and way more affordable and reliable than what was available prior to the Recovery Act.

(15,189 posts)My g/f said the internet was getting too many assholes on it. LOL! So I suggested an outernet for the smart people with a code or puzzle to enter on. I didn't get a computer till 7 years later, so I really had no idea about internet.
I hope this outernet works, mine got nowhere. LOL!

(13,485 posts)To make a long story short, it would probably have to have it's own Internet system in the end since the laws are blowing in the direction of Internet control. That would mean they would eventually have to pay for present net usage or create their own separate system. Circumvention can only go so far on small scale systems. A large scale system like this would have a hard time staying uncontrolled; it would be like a bandwidth turkey shoot. My explanation is too simplistic but that's as far as I feel like going with it.
Another reason to fight for Internet neutrality.

I find the phrase "selected internet data" interesting...I suppose that implies censorship, but we shall see!
