And they should always be registered.
We do not keep ammo in the house because we do not have a safe place to store them AND ammo. If someone hurts themselves with our weapons it will be because they dropped them on their toes- IF they can find them.
We feel safe with a snippy 13 pound terrier mix, and a mean as hell cat (seriously- we warn everyone- do NOT pet The Stink)- We sleep with a cell phone by the bed.
We used to eat meat- and still would if we had friends that hunt. We are not opposed to hunting at all when it means food on the table. We are opposed to "trophy hunting."
Guns and ammo need to be regulated to hell and back in this country, and frankly- we are more than willing to pay taxes out the wazzoo for that-
People need to quit being so damned stupid about their guns-

(16,974 posts)does my 1926 Mosin fall in that category? It is a full military spec firearm. How about my Swiss K31? It is also full military spec. My Ar 15 is not military spec so I guess that one is OK by your logic.

(25,725 posts)I thought you were gonna kick my ass!
Seriously, no joke. I am so fucking over it. We grew up with them- and no one, not one of our relatives, or friends discussed them unless they were antiques- as in "my great great grandfather's...."

(171,716 posts)is how gun humper logic has trumped gun owner logic - now we're seeing the extreme results and STILL these cowards refuse to admit there's a fucking problem
JanMichael
(25,725 posts)Neither one of us can believe the elementary school didn't accomplish something- those were babies. The first thing the cowards talked about was "more guns."
They are fucking nuts. Every damned one of them, and I don't care if they are Dems are Republicans.

(4,835 posts)And I was taught from the time I got my first hunting license (when I was 12) to respect guns. I remember my dad asking me how I'd feel if I accidentally shot someone I loved (like my granny) how bad I would feel. Obviously, that had an effect on me since it was over 40 years ago.
I don't have any guns now - my wife (she grew up around guns too) doesn't like guns, and I didn't own any when we got married - I sure wouldn't want them around my kids (even though they're adults now).
I understand that people like guns and I like your attitude about them. The idea that people should have guns to protect their homes is just asinine. I'm like you, I've got a cell phone next to my bed for protection.
JanMichael
(25,725 posts)The dog sleeps with us- the mean cat is downstairs. We know our neighbors-
I worry more about our big oak tree in the front yard falling during a storm than I do my damned guns. I don't get this new "I luvvvvv my guns" garbage in the US.
Blanks
(4,835 posts)And I'm seeing it from people who I never thought were all that passionate about guns. I have a cousin and my younger brother - they're posting 2nd amendment stuff on Facebook all the time.
There is some level of it that is a sense of belonging - they respect people who have guns, and they are trying to impress them. At least that's my guess.

(34,648 posts)You're right. I also do not own bullets. If i need them to target shoot, i buy them at the time. I have kids.
got rid of all bullets when the nieces and nephews started getting old enough to "mess" with things- it wasn't worth it. And no, we never bought a safe, displayed them, etc.

(6,655 posts)for stating the feelings of most American gun owners. The very vocal fringe Second Amendment extremists are only carrying water for the right-wing gun lobby, and don't even know it, because they actually believe the NRA lies and fear mongering.

What about everyone that isn't rich and can't afford to be taxed out the "wazzoo"?
JanMichael
(25,725 posts)Americans want to play (with guns, war toys, troops etc) but don't want to pay.
It sucks, eh.
Maybe ammo should be taxed. If you are a hunter, and depend on your bullets for food, then you better shoot wisely, and learn to reload. Or use a bow.
Taitertots
(7,745 posts)I guess you don't care that the policies you advocate effect millions of people that are not rich like you.
JanMichael
(25,725 posts)We are rolling in it- can hardly get our moneybags into the 10 year old car to get them to the bank!
Since you have concluded we are "wealthy," my answers to you are going to be just as ridiculous.
Taitertots
(7,745 posts)Or did you come to the realization that taxes would prevent you from owning/target shooting with firearms because you are not rich.
JanMichael
(25,725 posts)Honestly, who cares. If higher taxes meant getting rid of the damned guns, and we couldn't afford them, fine.
I could care less. Would like to keep the grandfather's .22 rifle. It's old.

(6,228 posts)They are small town, fifth generation, farmers. They struggle to get by, but take immense pride in providing good for Americans. They struggle to get by and utilize hunting to feed their family. They trap what they can, but also hunt. Your blatant disregard and lack of empathy for these poor Americans is disgusting.

PLEASE show me where I showed "lack of empathy" for "poor Americans."
Get over the bullshit- I am not even remotely interested in this silly assed fucking argument. Read my OP. READ IT.
I doubt your wife's relatives are gun humpers if they are using them to put food on the table.

(25,725 posts)If BOTH of you can't figure out the difference between an impovershed rural family shooting for food, and urban jackwit gun humpers, then you have more to do on the internet than read DU.
joeglow3
(6,228 posts)You said we should tax the hell out of bullets and if people are shooting for food, they better learn how to shoot better. That is a fuck you to poor and you are trying to backtrack and personally attack people who called you out. Sad...

(36,925 posts)You're the one claiming taxes are used for prohibition. You can either support that assertion or you can't and I can come up with all sorts of other relevant examples if you don't like the one provided.
If you don't want to pay for the societal costs of gun ownership, then you simply want everyone else to support your hobby.

(20,870 posts)There is however, something wrong with some gun owners.
I too own a couple handguns, but I don't mind registering them and presenting myself for a background check. Here in Ohio I even had to wait a week once before I could buy a second pistol as a gift for my youngest son.
Of course those were the olden days (back in the '90s I think), but the world incredibly still turns, I'm still free, and jack booted govt thugs have yet to storm my house to confiscate them. Go figure.

JanMichael
(25,725 posts)I have never shot a black powder revolver, although I have seen photos- how old is it?
Like I wrote, if we lived in a place with many hunters and access to meat, we would probably still eat meat- no problem with hunters at all. For the most part, they are the most "normal" gun owners.
doc03
(39,086 posts)you know. If someone needs to hunt for food using a black powder gun would make hunting more sporting. Most hunters are normal but
the NRA has turned many of them into gun nuts.
JanMichael
(25,725 posts)but, I did not know there are contemporary black powder revolvers out there- that's interesting. I will look them up. Thanks for the info-

(7,745 posts)In this thread the only thing I've opposed in taxation as a means of prohibition and the arbitrary use of a "need" standard for certain rights.
nomorenomore08
(13,324 posts)I guess I've just gotten accustomed to people knee-jerk rejecting even mild gun-control measures, like the ones I mentioned. But I realize that the majority of gun owners aren't so unreasonable.

We register our vehicles, buy insurance, we get our vehicles inspected for safe operation. Males register for the draft. Why are gun owners so exempt? This needs to change.
