I see a lot of other things. I see men who think feminism is a threat to their masculinity denying that cultural misogyny is any kind of problem. I see "second amendment Democrats" claiming guns aren't any kind of a problem, and that mental illness is the only reason for mass shootings. I see angry white people claiming that there's no such thing as white privilege, and anyway some white people are POOR, so stop saying that!

Really the most interesting thing about these "divisive" issues is that they serve to highlight just how many "liberals" and "progressives" are basically reactionaries when it comes to certain things.

Damned true. The paternalistic/racial status quo must be protected. All effort, energy and resources must be directed at the issue of income inequity.

Justifiably outraged people who (perhaps because of their outrage) are unable to entertain the notion that misogyny carried to the point of mass murder is, literally, insanity. And that the people pointing that out aren't (necessarily/probably) antifeminist.

I see pro-gun people (which I am not) pointing out that this madman used every means at his disposal to kill and maim, and so this can't be considered purely a gun issue.

I haven't followed any of the white privilege threads so I can't comment.

So what's interesting to me are two things: 1) The willingness of others on this site to ascribe reactionary motives to points of view opposing theirs, and 2) the willingness of others on this site to throw around the term "cultural misogyny" without defining it, putting bounds on it, or locating it with the culture as a whole.

That's what I see.

So yes, those people are reactionaries. If it weren't for a misogynist culture and the existence of the MRA/"pickup artist" forums he frequented, and if it weren't for the ready availability of guns in American culture, would this have happened? I think that these are very reasonable questions to ask, because things don't happen in a vacuum.

And if you aren't aware of cultural misogyny you're kind of blind, really. See for instance http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/may/26/yesallwomen-how-twitter-reacted-to-the-shootings-in-california (and really pretty much any of the tens of thousands of things posted on Twitter under that hashtag in the past week or so plus all of the media commentary it's generated).

That the phrase "a misogynist culture" is meaningless without some sort of definition, one that doesn't damn the entire culture for the actions of a segment thereof; that MRA/"pickup artist" forums are a tiny, tiny fraction of the discussions ongoing in social media; and that while gun availability is a cancer on American society, this is not primarily a gun crime.

And notwithstanding all the scary, beautiful, angry, truthful, wondering, clueless, defiant, vituperative, supportive and every other type of comment either at #YesAllWomen or inspired by it, asking questions seeking perspective, balance, and proportionality is not reactionary.

but you know, if you don't think that "misogynist" is an appropriate label for a culture where more often than not the most commonly accepted indicator of a woman's value is her sexual attractiveness? Where commentary on sexism in video games, or pretty much anything else, on Youtube, on Twitter, on blogs, et cetera, by women, is met with death threats, threats of rape, sexual comments, and the like? See also here, here, here...there's a lot more, it's basically everywhere, it's pretty much every woman who speaks up in a broadly accessible public forum...if you can tell me that's not a sign of a misogynist culture? Then I'm sorry, but I have no idea what it would take to make you think that it exists.

There has been a LOT of spouting, in particular, from a small number of reactionaries around here, about how all white people need to accept our supposed collective literal "privilege&quot and anyone who disagrees with that is somehow "uneducated", or a false liberal, or worse!, etc.), or how DU is supposedly full of misogynists(not true) or racists(also not true. Not even close!) over these past several months, just because people have disagreed with them, or whatever.....(not to mention the climate doomers are still causing problems as well, with their diatribes about how doomed we all are, and how anyone who disagrees with them, is a "denier" or a "minimizer", etc.) yeah, it's made this place a little hard to deal with sometimes.

But I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon. There's still many decent & intelligent people around here. If it were that hopeless, I'd have left a long time ago.
