The man was absolutely classless.

Unless that graduate (or those) was a family friend, imagine having this in your scrapbook when you were looking forward to a once in a lifetime photo of a dignified handshake from the Commander in Chief.

... to receive their diploma.

The exception was my class at university where there were so many baccalaureates we were instructed to rise as one, flip our tassels from one side of the hat to the other, congratulated and told to sit again. We were handed a diploma folder on the way out and the actual one was mailed to us.

Masters' candidates were called up by name, their major given, "hood" over the head, handshake, go sit down. PhDs got the full treatment including a brief precis of their dissertation topic, and told (this was the part I absolutely loved) "Welcome to the community of scholars."
